A River of Water of Life, Bright as Crystal
The river flowing in New Jerusalem shows us many aspects of the flow of the divine life into and through us both now and in the coming eternity.
Revelation 22:1 also tells us that the river of water of life is “bright as crystal.” The fact that the river of water of life is bright as crystal means that it has no darkness or opaqueness. Nothing is more clear than the flow of the river of water of life within us. The more this river flows in us, the more it purifies us and makes us transparent.
The river portrays the Spirit, who is “the Spirit of life” (Rom. 8:2). Titus 3:5 exclaims that “according to [God’s] mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Spirit.”
The Spirit works in us beginning from regeneration and continues through our entire Christian life with the renewing. This renewing gradually saturates us with the brightness and pureness of the river of water of life. In this way the characteristics of New Jerusalem are becoming our characteristics, thus preparing us for that eternal city.
