Dates and Nuts: The Energy Foods That Helped People Survive the Wilderness

The Bible often mentions foods that sustained people through long journeys and difficult seasons. One of the most important among them was the date.
Date palms appear throughout Scripture and carried much more meaning than simply being another fruit tree. For travelers, merchants, soldiers, and people crossing the wilderness, dates were valuable because they could be stored for a long time without spoiling. They were small, easy to carry, and provided quick energy when people were tired or hungry.
In Exodus 15, after the Israelites passed through the wilderness, they arrived at Elim.
“They came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped there near the water” (Exodus 15:27).
In this passage, the “palm trees” were most likely date palms. The Hebrew word often translated as “palm tree” in the Old Testament is “tamar,” which usually refers not to a general palm tree but specifically to a date palm.
Because of this, some English Bible translations even render Exodus 15:27 as “70 date palms” instead of simply “70 palm trees.”
The word “tamar” itself means “date” or “date palm” in Hebrew. The biblical name Tamar also comes from the same word.
In the middle of the wilderness, date palm were more than part of the scenery. They meant water, food, shade, and the possibility of rest. Palm trees represented survival and recovery.
Dates are also nutritionally rich. They contain natural sugars that provide quick energy, but they also have fiber, which helps prevent blood sugar from rising too quickly. Dates are rich in potassium, magnesium, B vitamins, and iron, which can support energy, blood pressure, bone health, and recovery from fatigue.
One reason dates were especially valuable in biblical times was because they could be stored for long periods. Long before refrigeration existed, people could carry dates with them on long trips without worrying that they would spoil.
When dates are eaten with nuts like almonds, walnuts, or pistachios, they become an even more balanced food.
Nuts are rich in healthy fats, protein, vitamin E, and magnesium. Dates provide quick energy, while nuts help provide longer-lasting fullness and more steady energy. Together, they make a simple snack that can keep a person going through a long day.
Even today, dates and nuts can be a great choice before or after exercise, during a busy afternoon, or anytime you need quick but lasting energy. Compared to sugary snacks, they provide a more natural source of fuel that lasts longer.
The foods God provided for people in the wilderness were never just about filling their stomachs. They were foods that helped people survive, recover, and keep going.
