Be a Voice for Life
“I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.” (Deuteronomy 30:19)
Halloween is back in full force. Plastic skeletons, inflatable hobgoblins, and witchy figures have cropped up in yards around town. None of it is appealing to me…well, maybe the trick-or-treat candy is…but I can enjoy chocolate anytime without the creepiness thrown in.
Instead of ranting about all the Halloween craziness, however, I’ve decided to celebrate something different this week: the beauty of life.
Our God is the Lord and Creator of life. His enemy, Satan, can’t create life, and he is dedicated to destroying it. That’s why when Jesus was confronted face-to-face with the death of his good friend Lazarus, He wept…out of sorrow for Lazarus and his family, out of anger at the horrific work of Satan.
Life is such an incredible gift, one of God’s most triumphant masterpieces. A magnificent sequoia tree begins with the germination of a small seed, growing hundreds of years into a forest of gigantic stature.
In humans, the miracle of life begins at conception. I remember when I was fewer than six weeks into pregnancy with our daughter, watching and hearing her heartbeat on the ultrasound machine, even though she was the size of a small bean. I was wowed by the image, captivated by what God had created, a beautiful child from Him.

All life is worthy of protection, of cherishing. When we follow Jesus, He shows us how precious we are, giving us an abundant life of joy and peace as we walk with Him. If you have an unplanned pregnancy, it’s never a surprise to Him—all children are His pinnacle of creation, formed by His mighty hands, to be loved and nourished.
Beyond this earthly realm, Jesus has purchased eternal life in heaven for us through His sacrifice on the cross—to give us the grace, mercy, and forgiveness we need. There is no more death or sorrow with Him…no evil, no sins, no grief. Jesus is the only way, the only truth, and the only life.
So how do we celebrate life together, this week in particular? Start with sharing your testimony of God’s gift of grace and life to you. If someone brings up Halloween in a conversation, use it as a talking point to mention that you’d rather celebrate the gift of life from God and the harvest of good things He has given you.
Another opportunity is with trick-or-treaters. What a marvelous option when little children, especially those whom you don’t know, come knock on your door to ask for candy! It’s the perfect time to hand out treats with tracts—little cards to introduce them to Jesus. You’re welcome to copy and print the attached Gospel-message tracts (see below) and slip them into kids’ buckets and bags. And pray for those who will take them home to enjoy with your candy.
Finally, support your local Christian pregnancy clinic with a financial gift, volunteering, or baby-shower gifts of diapers, wipes, formula, etc.
Let’s redeem this season to defeat Satan’s glee and honor our Lord with joy for the life He has bestowed on us. Let’s share His good news with a darkened world, opening doors to tell children and teens about Him. Let’s use our homes and words to give hope to those who need His abundant life.
Next plastic skeleton you see (and it might be in your own yard), stop and thank God for the way He has formed the bone structure in you and given you a life wrapped around it—an abundant life in Him that will live on beyond your bones, to dwell in His joyful presence for eternity. And tell someone about it!
Holy God, thank You for all the ways You have blessed me in Your amazing creation of life. Help me to use the opportunities You give me to celebrate Jesus and His salvation. Thank You for Your abundant life here and the promise of an eternal life with You in heaven. Let this gratitude bubble over into an excited readiness to tell others about Him. And let the breath of Your Holy Spirit fill me with the courage to share Your good news. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
