Memory Verse: 1 Corinthians 1:27 “But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty.
Bible commentary: 1 Corinthians 1
- The two major themes of 1 Corinthians 1 are disunity in church and wisdom of God
- This book was written by Paul who introduced himself as an Apostle called and ordained by God
- Verse 2: Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours
- Paul addressed Christian as saints….Saint in English connotes holiness, righteousness, virtuousness and heavenly consciousness. Do you act and behave as a Saint?
- Verse 5: That in everything ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge;
- Paul says by virtue of being Saints, every Christians has been given the grace to be rich in utterance and knowledge. Are you lacking utterance or knowledge then cry to God because it is your divine saintly right
- Verse 8: Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- Paul mentioned another quality of Saints, you should be blameless. Are you blameless at home, office, business, and church? Do you act to be blameless?
- Verse 10: Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
- Paul preached against divisions in the church. Nowadays churches are not only divided in denominations but there are deep divisions within denominations and each congregation.
- There are divisions among Pastors, Women, Men, General overseers, and even among units in churches.
- Holy Spirit reunite the Church in Jesus name.
- Verse 12: Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.
- Paul derided the Corinthians for following Apostles rather than following Christ. The early Christians had divided themselves between Paul, Apollos and Cephas.
- Just like in those days, many Christians are following Preachers, Pastors and General Overseers rather than Jesus. Many Christians believe in their Pastors more than Jesus and believe their church doctrines more than the Bible.
- God deliver me from man-made gods in Pastor’s cloak.
- Verse 13: Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?
- Paul asked a very portent question. Is Christ divided? Men have divided the gospel and church for selfish reasons. The gospel remains one, but it has been artificially divided
- Verse 17: For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.
- Paul states what should be the vision of every Christian…. For Christ sent me to preach the gospel.
- Why are you a Christian? What is your ambition in the church? To get business opportunities, get a church title, get a man or lady to marry or receive financial help?
- Here Paul says your focus in and outside the church should be primarily to preach the gospel
- Verse 19-20: For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this world? Hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?
- We are to rely on the wisdom of God rather than wisdom of the world. God promises to destroy the wisdom of the world turn it into foolishness, and save the world by His word, which they world considers ‘foolishness’. Implying no one can be saved by the wisdom of the world, rather we can only be saved by the word of God.
