Bible commentary: Matthew 12

Matthew 12 focuses on the contentious issue of sanctity of the Sabbath day; the chapter also introduces Christians to the necessity of spiritual warfare.

The Jews up till now, regard the Sabbath day as a holy day that should be devoted only to the worship of God, and no form of secular work or non-religious activity is permitted.

Jesus denounced religious legalism explaining that the law is created for man, and man is not created for law. Jesus went ahead to introduce himself as the Lord of Sabbath (vs. 8) – For the Son of man is Lord even of the Sabbath; implying the Sabbath was created as a day of worship, to worship Jesus who is both Lord and God.

He encouraged Christians to demonstrate acts of mercy rather than indulge in rituals and sacrifices (vs. 7) – But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless; meaning righteousness, can best be observed by acts of love and mercy, rather than observing rituals, sacrifices, or religious ceremonies.

The chapter also introduced readers to a spiritual entity called the ‘strongman’ who hinders children of God from assessing their blessings. Jesus explained that Christians can only possess blessings harbored by the strongman only after they have overcome the strongman.

Facts about demons

Matthew 12 vs. 43 – 45

43 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. 44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. 45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

Matthew 12 vs. 43 – 45 – gives more spiritual insight into the nature and activities of demonic spirits, which are the following:

They can go in and out of a person (vs. 43) – When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.

They walk up and down. They are mobile, not stationary (vs. 43) – When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.

They are parasites; they can’t survive on their own but have to inhabit a host environment. (vs. 43) – When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.

They don’t enjoy being homeless or not finding a body to inhabit (vs.43) – When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.

They can be tired and like to rest in a host environment ( 43) – When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.

They can turn the body of a person into their houses (vs. 44) – Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.

They can become a landlord or landlady in the body of their host (vs. 44) – Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.

They find it difficult to possess Christians that are holy (vs. 44) – Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.

They network, they work in unity, and strengthen one another (vs. 44) – Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.

They recognize a Christian that is holy and reinforce their strength to attack Christians (vs.45) – Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

They are wicked (vs. 45) – Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

They have hierarchy (vs. 45) – Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

They can stay in a person for a long time; they can occupy a person comfortably (vs. 43) – When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.

They are destructive (vs. 45) – Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

They afflict those that are spiritually dry (vs. 45) – Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.
