Bible Verses to Pray Over a Sick Loved One

Sitting beside a hospital bed, holding the hand of someone you love who is hurting, is one of the most helpless feelings in the world. You want to do something — and praying Scripture over them is something real you can do.

These bible verses to pray over a sick loved one are meant to be prayed aloud or silently at the bedside: for the one who is ill, and for you, the one keeping watch. Each comes with a short reflection and a simple way to turn it into prayer. You don't need the right words of your own — you can borrow God's.

A word before the verses: praying for healing and trusting good medical care are not opposites. Throughout history, people of faith have prayed and sought treatment, trusting God to work through both. Pray boldly, and lean on doctors and nurses too.

Verses to pray for the one who is sick

Begin by praying God's care directly over the patient. The psalmist blesses "the LORD... who heals all your diseases" (Psalm 103:2-3) — a reminder that healing flows from God's very nature. And Jeremiah's cry makes a beautiful bedside prayer: "Heal me, LORD, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved" (Jeremiah 17:14).

A way to pray it: place a hand gently on your loved one and pray, "LORD who heals all diseases, I bring [name] to you. Heal them, save them, and let them feel your nearness right now."

Verses for fear and for courage

Illness brings fear — for the patient and the family. Isaiah's promise speaks straight into it: "So do not fear, for I am with you... I will strengthen you and help you" (Isaiah 41:10). Pray this over a frightened loved one, and over your own anxious heart. When the worry becomes its own burden, our verses for anxiety and a troubled heart can steady you while you wait.

When you don't know how to pray: ask others to pray too

Scripture explicitly invites us to bring sickness to the community of faith: "Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them" (James 5:14). You are not meant to carry this alone. Asking your church, friends, or a prayer chain to pray alongside you is exactly what this verse encourages.

Verses for rest in the long vigil

Caregiving is exhausting, and the watcher needs Scripture too. Jesus' invitation is for you as much as the patient: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). And the psalmist's confidence — "the LORD sustains them on their sickbed" (Psalm 41:3) — reminds you that God is present in that room even when you step out to rest.

A pastoral note on praying for healing

In years of walking with families through illness, I have learned to pray for healing with both boldness and trust. We ask God plainly for healing, because he is the healer. But we also entrust the outcome to him, who sees what we cannot and whose timing is not ours. Sometimes healing comes quickly, sometimes through long treatment, sometimes the body is not healed even as the soul is held. Praying these verses is not a formula that guarantees a particular result; it is a way of placing someone we love into the hands of the One who loves them even more than we do. That trust, held alongside our asking, is itself a form of peace.

A short prayer for a sick loved one

LORD, healer of all our diseases, I bring [name] before you. Touch their body, calm their fear, and let them know you are near. Strengthen the doctors and nurses caring for them. And give me, the one keeping watch, your rest, for I am weary. I trust the outcome to you, and I ask you boldly: heal, sustain, and comfort. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

What Bible verses can I pray over someone who is sick?
Good verses to pray include Psalm 103:2-3 (the LORD who heals all diseases), Jeremiah 17:14 ("Heal me, LORD"), Isaiah 41:10 (do not fear, I am with you), and Psalm 41:3 (God sustains the sick). Pray them slowly over your loved one and over yourself.

Should I pray for healing or accept God's will?
Both, together. Scripture encourages us to ask God boldly for healing while also trusting his wisdom and timing with the outcome. Praying for healing and accepting God's will are held together, not opposed.

Does praying mean I shouldn't rely on doctors?
Not at all. People of faith have long prayed and sought medical care, trusting God to work through doctors, medicine, and treatment as well as through prayer. Pursue both wholeheartedly.

What if my loved one isn't healed?
This is one of faith's hardest questions. The Bible holds out both real prayers for healing and the reality that healing doesn't always come as we hope, while promising God's nearness through it all and ultimate healing in eternity (Revelation 21:4). Lean on your community and, if needed, a pastor or counselor.
