Gloria Gaynor, born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1943, has enjoyed a remarkable career spanning over five decades, solidifying her status as a disco legend and an enduring symbol of resilience. Her 1975 debut album, “Never Can Say Goodbye,” played a pivotal role in popularizing disco music, featuring innovative dance tracks that seamlessly blended soul and funk elements.
In 1978, amidst personal challenges—including health issues and the loss of her mother—Gaynor recorded “I Will Survive.” Initially released as a B-side, the song’s empowering lyrics and infectious melody resonated globally, transforming it into an anthem for those facing adversity. Over the years, it has been embraced by various communities, notably serving as a symbol of strength for women and the LGBTQ+ community.
Beyond her disco roots, Gaynor has explored diverse musical genres. In 2019, she released “Testimony,” a gospel album that earned her a Grammy Award for Best Roots Gospel Album in 2020.
