Gloria Gaynor, born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1943, has enjoyed a remarkable career spanning over five decades, solidifying her status as a disco legend and an enduring symbol of resilience. Her 1975 debut album, “Never Can Say Goodbye,” played a pivotal role in popularizing disco music, featuring innovative dance tracks that seamlessly blended soul and funk elements.

In 1978, amidst personal challenges—including health issues and the loss of her mother—Gaynor recorded “I Will Survive.” Initially released as a B-side, the song’s empowering lyrics and infectious melody resonated globally, transforming it into an anthem for those facing adversity. Over the years, it has been embraced by various communities, notably serving as a symbol of strength for women and the LGBTQ+ community.

Beyond her disco roots, Gaynor has explored diverse musical genres. In 2019, she released “Testimony,” a gospel album that earned her a Grammy Award for Best Roots Gospel Album in 2020.

Demonstrating her versatility, she collaborated with Kylie Minogue in 2021 on the disco track “Can’t Stop Writing Songs About You,” bridging classic and contemporary disco sounds.

In early February 2025, Gaynor unveiled a new single, “Fida Known,” coinciding with the release of her biopic, “I Will Survive: The Gloria Gaynor Story.” This film, produced in part by Robin Roberts’ Rockin’ Robin production company, chronicles Gaynor’s life and her indelible impact on music and culture. It can be viewed on streaming services like Hulu+ and LifeTime.

At 81, Gloria Gaynor remains a vibrant force in the music industry, her unwavering spirit and contributions continuing to inspire and empower diverse audiences worldwide.
