Calling on the Name of the Lord

Many verses in the Bible mention calling on the Lord’s name. This began with the third generation of men in Genesis 4 and continued strongly into the New Testament age.

New JerusalemCalling on the name of the Lord must at sometimes be audible, even loud. Acts 9:14 says “he [Saul] has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call upon Your name.” How could Saul know who are the callers if he could not hear them calling?

Are you a caller? First Corinthians is written to “To the church of God which is in Corinth…with all those who call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place.” We should be callers wherever we are.

In his first gospel message to the Jewish people, Peter quoted Joel’s words, including “it shall be that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21). Peter proclaimed this before he asked them to repent and be baptized (v. 38). When Stephen was being stoned to death (Acts 7:59), “he called upon the Lord and said, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!”

These verses show that calling was a significant part of the early Christians’ life, and it should be the same today. I expect that New Jerusalem will be full of calling.
