Communication in Marriage by Roger Pauley

There is one key ingredient, that is essential in every relationship, especially in our marriages! That key is... communication.

The number one ingredient for a successful marriage is the foundation of the Lord Jesus Christ! We realize that Christ desires to be the center of the home. However, we must also be reminded, that even in the best of homes, there is a great need for love, respect and kindness. There is one key ingredient, that is essential in every relationship, especially in our marriages! That key is… communication.

    1. Effective communication is not necessarily what is being said, but rather what is being understood. “Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man” (Colossians 4:6).

    2. Proper communication in marriage begins with listening skills. If we are going to communicate properly, we must listen, not just with our ears, but with our eyes!He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him” (Proverbs 18:13).

    3. While we are speaking to our spouse, we must be sensitive to our facial expressions, our eye contact, and especially the tone of our voice. “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you” (Ephesians 4:32).

    4. We also need to be sensitive in how we use personal pronouns. Life is not about me or mine, but about “us” and “ours.” Your speech should reflect a desire to uplift your spouse. “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger” (Proverbs 15:1).

    5. Remember, it is not necessarily what we say…but how we say it and when we say it. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof” (Proverbs 18:21).

“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” (Ephesians 4:29).
