Day 19: Your Cause (Bible Tribe Job 5–6) - Denise Pass

Good morning, friends! Day Nineteen! What is your cause that gets you out of bed in the morning? What is your passion or heart in this life? When our “why” lines up with God’s, lives are transformed.

Bible Reading: Job 5-6

Verse of the day: Job 5:8, “But as for me, I would seek God, And I would place my cause before God.”

Word of the day: “Cause”. It is the Hebrew word: דִּבְרָה (dib-raw’).

This word means: reason, sake, intent, estate, end, regard, or manner.

What Is Your Cause?

Eliphaz, one of Job’s friends offers counsel to Job. Commentators do not speak well of Job’s comrades as they lacked compassion in their counsel. And ultimately God disciplined them for it. But there are still gems within their counsel and defense of God. Nonetheless, their example serves to remind us that how we witness to others in their time of suffering matters and can point them to Jesus or to themselves.

Job wanted to be seen in his suffering, not just placated. Eliphaz was intimating that Job hadn’t done the obvious—commit his way to God. His predicament and welfare. But the advice to submit our plight or cause to God is good advice when rightly offered.

Consider Your “Why”

This word of the day (dib-raw’) occurs seven times in Scripture and interestingly, one context in Ps 110:4 is usually translated “order of Melchisedek” or “succession.” This speaks to our cause going well past our days – our cause becomes our legacy. All that we endure in this world isn’t our true cause. Our existence before our Creator and holy God dictates that our cause must become His. And friend, God cares so very much about what matters to us. He is compassionate, unlike Job’s friends, and our desires also become His.

What is your cause? I desire to love my people well and help my children to hold onto their faith. This love is the motivating force behind why I homeschooled for 23 years. But there is an underlying reason behind this goal—to be faithful to Christ’s cause. When we approach God and lay down our way and pick up the way of Christ—to reach others with the Gospel, we are transformed.

Application

• Don’t let your cause become larger in your eyes than God’s grace to meet you in that place.
• You are significant in God’s eyes, whether or not your cause is resolved.
