Does God Still Heal People Today? Greg Laurie Answers
Do Miracles and Healings Still Happen?
Yes, God still heals people today. He is still in the miracle business.
But what else should we know about divine healing?
Why Doesn’t God Heal Everyone?
Then why isn’t everyone healed? Good question. I don’t have the answer to that. But I do think that some people might still be sick because they simply have not asked for healing. Please note—I am not saying that everyone who is sick is only so because they haven’t asked. In fact, most people have probably asked over and over.
But if you haven’t, ask Him. James reminds us, “You do not have because you do not ask” (James 4:2 NKJV).
There is an element of faith that can be involved in a person’s healing.
Is Healing Based on How Much Faith You Have?
Think of the woman who had spent all her money on doctors to no avail. She reasoned, “If I can just touch the edge of Jesus’ robe, I will be healed.”
She slipped her hand through the crowd, touched His robe, and Jesus stopped and said, “Somebody touched Me, for I perceived power going out from Me” (Luke 8:46 NKJV).
The word for power there is the Greek word dunamis, translated dynamite. Jesus was saying, “Explosive power just went out of Me.” And by the way, He didn’t want to correct her. He wanted to commend her faith.
But then there are times when you can muster all the faith you have, and the healing will not come. That’s not necessarily because you lack faith. It may just be that God does not want to heal at this moment for His own reasons.
And some people were touched by God who had no faith at all. How much faith did Lazarus have when Jesus raised him from the dead? Zero (you don’t have a lot of faith when you’re dead). That was the faith of Jesus.
Does Anyone Have the Gift of Healing?
In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul lists the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Right after the gift of faith, he writes, “to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:9 NKJV).
Notice that Paul says “gifts of healings.” Gifts, plural. Healings, plural. I think God gives these gifts of healings—or, put another way, these healing moments—as He sovereignly chooses. But no one has the ability to do it at will. Even the apostle Paul did not have the gift of healing.
“But Greg, many people were healed by the touch of Paul.” True, and by Peter and other apostles. But it’s not a gift one can exercise at will; healing is in His hands, not a power any of us holds.
Can God Use Sickness and Disability for His Glory?
The apostle Paul had a thorn in the flesh (see 2 Corinthians 12), given to keep him from becoming proud. Three times he asked the Lord to take it away, and each time the Lord said, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:7-9 NKJV).
You see, sometimes God can use sickness or a disability. In fact, He can take a disability and turn it into a supernatural ability.
Joni Eareckson Tada has spent her life in a wheelchair after a diving accident in her youth, and she has inspired millions around the world. My friend Nick Vujicic was born with no arms and no legs, and he has glorified God with his life in a beautiful way. He goes onto campuses radiating the joy of Jesus Christ and telling kids, “You can go on another day.”
Then there are people who are too busy for God, until sickness comes. God uses the sickness to draw them to Himself. As the psalmist said, “Before I was afflicted I went astray, But now I keep Your word.” (Psalm 119:67 NKJV).
Don’t Be So Focused on Miracles You Lose Sight of Christ
So pray for healing. Ask God for a miracle where you need it. But don’t become so obsessed with it that you miss Jesus Christ Himself.
As you hope and wait, don’t forget to keep the focus on Him.
