Does My Story Matter?: The Power of Testimony

    ree

Have you ever wondered if your story really matters? Maybe you’ve thought that your story isn’t anything special, or maybe it’s too messy for God to use. We can all wrestle with questions about our worth or whether or not our experiences could actually resonate and help someone else in their faith.

But here’s the truth: God gave each of us a story on purpose, and he calls us to share it. The point of our stories isn’t to make much of ourselves—it’s to make much of him. And when we tell our story with him at the center, it becomes a powerful testimony to the goodness, holiness, and faithfulness of our God.

What does the Bible say about sharing our testimony with others?

Throughout Scripture, we see God at work in people’s lives. Their stories inspire others. Testimonies have a powerful way of revealing who God is, what he’s done, and what he can do.

Revelation 12:11 says, “They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony…” This verse in Revelation describes how believers overcome Satan in two ways: through the blood of Jesus and by publicly professing their faith. Sharing our testimony is more than a personal story—it’s a weapon in the battle between good versus evil.

Psalm 107:2 says, “Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story…”  This verse encourages us to share our story with others. When we publicly declare God’s faithfulness and goodness in our lives, we encourage other believers and plant seeds of the Gospel in the hearts of nonbelievers. It’s a reminder to us and others of the power of the Gospel at work in real, everyday lives.

We also see the power of storytelling woven all throughout the Old Testament. The Israelites passed down stories of God’s faithfulness from generation to generation—retelling stories of how God moved, provided, and rescued them time and time again. Whether it was crossing the Red Sea, manna in the wilderness, or entering the Promised Land, they never stopped telling the miracles they experienced. These stories were more than memories—they were how Israel remembered who they were and who God is. It was their way of teaching preceding generations about God’s character and his covenant.

In the same way, when we share our testimony, we’re not just telling a story—we’re pointing others closer to God.

How do we share our story in an effective way?

    1. Your story is not primarily about you. It is about God at work in you.

Your story isn’t powerful because of what you’ve done, but because of what God has done in and through you. When you share your story, focus less on glorifying your past and more on God’s redemptive work through it. Center the story on his grace, not your mistakes or achievements.

Ask yourself: “What does my story show about who God is?”

    1. Tell your story with a clear beginning and end.

A lot of things happen in life, which makes it difficult to sum it up in just a few minutes. The good thing is, you don’t have to talk about every little detail, just the key moments that played a role in you becoming a believer.

Recently, my life group just went through sharing our testimonies. Someone shared a great resource that talked about how our testimony should reflect the framework of the Gospel: the creation, fall, redemption, and restoration. Our stories should reflect the Creator’s story. Here are some questions to think through.

Creation: How did you grow up? What was your origin? Where did you find your identity?

Fall: What brokenness separated you from God?

Redemption: When was the moment you turned from your sin and made Jesus the Lord over your life? What was that moment of full surrender for you?

Restoration: How is Jesus at work in your life today? What’s different about your life?

Another way you can look at this is by telling your story with a clear before-meeting-Jesus and after-meeting-Jesus story arc. When we decide to follow Jesus, we can’t go back to living in our sin. We die to our old selves and experience new life! Describe that journey.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” – 2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV

    1. Pray about and reflect on your story.

Don’t rush your story. Instead, slow down and really reflect on how God has worked in your life. Ask him to help you identify those key moments in your life that brought you closer to him, ultimately choosing to follow him.

Maybe you’ve shared your testimony before, or maybe it’s your first time. Regardless, it can be intimidating to share your story, but remember: it’s not your job to save people. God commands us to go and make disciples, but he is the one who works in people’s hearts. We are simply called to share our faith and live in obedience.

Take time to reflect, spend time with God, and boldly proclaim what God has done and is continuing to do in and through your life.
