Don’t Fall Into The Snares Of The Devil
King David often cried out to God for His protection. He needed it for more than physical enemies. But also from the unseen forces of the devil who set snares to entrap his soul.
In Psalm 141, he prayed for the Lord to guard his mouth, his heart, and his path. He didn’t want to fall into the traps set by the wicked. His plea still echoes for every believer today.
Keep me from the traps they have set for me, from the snares of those who do wrong. Let the wicked fall into their own nets, but let me escape. Psalm 141:9-10
The devil knows how to bait snares. He studies human weaknesses and waits patiently until the perfect moment to strike. His traps and snares come in all shapes and sizes.
Sometimes his traps look harmless. Like an innocent conversation, a little compromise, or a moment of pride. Other times, they come wrapped in temptation or disguised as opportunity.
Often, by the time we notice the danger, the rope tightens around our spiritual ankles. And just like that, one of the snares of the devil has us right where he wants us.
Imagine walking through the woods. The path appears clear, sunlight filters through the trees, and all seems peaceful. Then suddenly—snap! You find yourself in quite a predicament.
A hidden rope cinches around your ankle, making you hang upside down, disoriented and helpless. The unseen trap caught you. Some might consider the episode somewhat funny.
Spiritually speaking, though, there’s nothing funny when it happens to us. In fact, it’s no laughing matter anytime the devil entraps or snares a believer. Let’s move to a different setting.

The Devil Snares Us for Keeps
Shifting from the woods to the sea becomes even more tragic. Picture fishermen hauling in their heavy nets. Within the mesh wriggle hundreds of creatures, some valuable, others discarded.
The fish twist and fight, scraping their scales and tearing their fins, desperate for freedom. Many never escape. The water around them clouds red as the strong overpower the weak.
That’s how Satan operates. He doesn’t want to let anyone go. He wants to entangle us by the gills of sin—trapped, bleeding, and hopeless. In the process, he keeps whispering lies to us.
He says things like, “You’ll never change. You’ve gone too far. You can’t afford to be free.” Those lies pull on the net. Guilt and shame tighten the cords until we stop struggling altogether.
The snares of the devil rarely appear overnight; they develop slowly. A believer begins with a small compromise. Or they say a harsh word left unchecked or conceal an unconfessed secret.
Some justify a habit with the words, “just this once.” Over time, these tiny knots form the strands of a larger net. Some Christians recognize the danger and, in their panic, make things worse.
They thrash about, trying to cut themselves loose by their own strength. But the more they fight without God’s help, the deeper they sink. The devil joyfully watches his snares grip them tighter.
Some reach for numbing escapes—drugs, alcohol, or destructive relationships—only to drown them further in their addiction or despair. Why? Because the devil uses them as snares, too.
Others pursue self-help philosophies or spiritual fads that promise enlightenment but only twist the cords tighter. The saddest part comes when people believe they’re free while still trapped.

We Can’t Escape On Our Own
The enemy loves creating the illusion of liberty. The devil loosens his snares just enough to make someone think they’ve achieved freedom. But then he’ll yank the ropes tighter.
That’s why David prayed, “Keep me from the traps they have set for me.” He knew he couldn’t avoid every snare on his own. Therefore, he needed to depend on the only One truly dependable.
Only God can clearly see the pathways in which we walk. Only God can expose the hidden nets and snares set by the devil before we step into them.
Here lies the good news of the gospel. Jesus doesn’t stand at the edge of the sea shouting, “Swim harder!” No! He dives into the tangled mess Himself and enters the net.
He already took the cords of sin upon His own body and broke their power with His blood. When Christ went to the cross, He faced every spiritual trap the enemy could set.
He defeated temptation, betrayal, and the grave. His resurrection tore the net and snares of the devil wide open. Everyone who calls on His name can walk in freedom and without guilt.
- When Christ enters your life, He cuts you loose and washes you clean.
- Jesus can cut through even the thickest strands of sin. Thus, He carries your broken net of sin out to sea, never to be seen again.
- You don’t need to pay the price for your release—Jesus already paid it.
- You don’t need to bleed for your freedom—He already shed His blood for you.

Guarding Against New Snares Set By the Devil
The devil crafts snares for destruction, but God turns them back on him. The very traps meant for your ruin can become a testimony of your deliverance. The Psalmist continued by saying.
Let the wicked fall into their own nets, but let me escape. Psalm 141:10
Freedom requires vigilance because the devil never stops setting new snares. He knows your weaknesses and blind spots. That’s why daily communion with God matters.
A heart anchored in prayer and obedience stays alert to the Holy Spirit’s warnings. I have included the following practical steps to help you guard against the snares of the devil.

- Stay in the Word. Scripture exposes lies before they can deceive you. The light of God’s truth reveals all the hidden snares the devil sets along your path.
- Pray for discernment. Ask God to sharpen your spiritual senses. He’ll show you what to avoid and when to step carefully.
- Confess quickly. Don’t let sin linger. Confession breaks the first strand before it becomes a net.
- Fellowship with believers. God often uses others to help us recognize traps we can’t see. Accountability keeps us alert and humble.
- Walk in gratitude. A thankful heart resists temptation because it finds satisfaction in God’s provision, not the enemy’s bait.
Each of these steps acts like armor, protecting you from the subtle lures of sin. Remember, the same God who rescued David from his enemies will protect you from the snares of the devil.
Lord, thank you for releasing me from the snares that the devil had used to hold me captive. I pray that you keep me alert, guard my heart from compromise, and my mind from deception.
