Encouragement is More Than a Drive-By Prayer - A Nighttime Prayer

“Kind words are like honey—sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.”
– Proverbs 16:24 (NLT)

Please Pray:

Dear Triune God,

Tonight I lift up my friend who is hurting and overwhelmed. I ask for compassion--brave vulnerable compassion--so I can truly see my friend who is overwhelmed in their fear, their grief, and their questions.

Help me to sit with them in their mess, to bear witness to their pain without trying to fix it. Give me patience when their sorrow is heavy and my own heart feels overwhelmed. Let my words be kind and nourishing, like honey to their weary soul. Also let me know when to be quiet and just sit with them. Please quicken my heart to stop when I am “telling” my friend how to be. Teach me how to be present even when I do not understand, I do not know what to say, and maybe my “me, too” is all I have to offer.

May my presence reflect your love and your faithfulness, giving them a flicker of hope that they are not alone.

And I pray desperately, dear Triune God, fix my friend’s mess. Do something.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
