Even on the Hard Days, Joy is Always Found in Jesus

Rejoice in the Lord, always. Again, I say rejoice! – Philippians 4:4

I’ve never been good at being happy. There are moments when everything lines up just right: the sun pours through the kitchen window while I sip my coffee, the kids are laughing instead of arguing, I find a parking spot right away, and for a few precious minutes, life feels perfect.

But then the phone rings with bad news. Or someone snaps at me. Or the car won’t start. And just like that, my sunny day is turned upside down. I’m left standing in the same kitchen, but now it feels dim, heavy, and empty.

I’ve come to see that happiness is like a soap bubble—beautiful while it lasts, but so easily popped by the sharp edges of this broken world. It’s always dictated by something outside of my control: perfect circumstances, other people’s behavior, or my own performance. When those things change or shift (and they always do), the feeling goes with them.

Lately, God’s been teaching me that joy isn’t the same as happiness. Joy doesn’t depend on my day going smoothly or on everything feeling “right.” Joy is anchored in Jesus Himself, the One who stays the same even when my world is spinning. He doesn’t fade when the diagnosis comes, when relationships strain, when plans fall apart. Who He is—faithful, loving, sovereign, victorious—never changes. And because our joy is based on Him, we don’t have to wait for ideal conditions to feel at peace.

Paul understood this from a prison cell. Chained, uncertain about tomorrow, he still wrote, “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I say, rejoice! (Philippians 4:4). He wasn’t pretending the hardship wasn’t real. He was choosing to fix his eyes on Christ instead of the bars around him. That’s the kind of joy we want, one that holds firm no matter what is happening around us.

Friend, your day might not have started with sunshine and rainbows, or maybe you are just barely holding your head above water. Remember, when everything else fails, Jesus is there, and He is faithful. Take a deep breath and look to Him. He will always be your reason to rejoice.

Questions for Reflection:

1. Do you have difficulty distinguishing happiness from joy?

2. What types of things can you do every day to help you appreciate the joy that you have in your life?

3. Ask God in prayer to help you see the glass half full rather than half empty.
