Feathers

He will cover you with his feathers; you will take refuge under his wings. His faithfulness will be a protective shield. – Psalm 91:4 (CSB)

I’ve always been intrigued by birds. Their tiny little bodies weather the elements. They know migration routes and when it's time to go. They sing beautiful songs from just before dawn into the night. And they are beautiful, even the less-than-flashy colored ones.

Bird feathers have great meaning in many cultures, past and present. Native Americans use eagle feathers as the most significant part of headdresses to represent honor and respect. The Bible speaks of eagles because of their strength and swiftness. It speaks of sparrows in that God knows when one falls.

I’ve read that finding a feather has meaning. A white and grey feather can symbolize healing, growth, peace, and prosperity. Finding one can mean you’re on the right path. A grey feather can mean tranquility and peace. White feathers are believed to symbolize peace, purity and spiritual growth.

The Bible also uses feathers to symbolize God’s protection. I can visualize myself comforted and safely tucked under God’s faithful and beautiful wings.

It’s actually illegal to possess bird feathers. It’s part of a law to protect migratory birds. But God’s symbolic feathered wings will always be free to shelter you and shield you.

I’ve seen the cute videos of tiny puppies or kittens under the wings of a chicken. Chickens are great mothers, keeping their little ones safely tucked under them. That instinct takes in other small species sometimes. What a beautiful example of God’s love for us. Feathers are beautiful but what they symbolize is the most beautiful of all.

1. Are you going through a difficult season in your life?

2. Could you ask the Lord to cover you with His comforting, mighty wings?

3. Try to visualize yourself tucked under the Lord’s feathers. Because you are.
