“FEEL GOOD” TUNES TUESDAY: ‘Til Tuesday’s Song, “Voices Carry” - The DV Walking Wounded:

ARTIST/SONG: ‘Til Tuesday, “Voices Carry” (1985)

I had to do a throw back to my favorite music decade, the 1980’s, not to mention the name of the band being totally appropriate for today’s post. I always liked this song, despite the fact that I could tell the “he” in the song, was trying to control the singer. The video really brought that message home, definitely highlighting the words of the song! Geez, I remember when this song debuted! Am I OLD???

And how many times has my Abuser said to me, “Keep your voice down.” And I to him. Sheesh. Too many times to count. I didn’t want the neighbors hearing and calling the police, or our kids to hear and be frightened. Didn’t matter. Everyone heard. The kids heard and let that fester. The neighbors heard and ignored the intensity and the words. This song DEFINITELY resinates with me, on SO many levels…

    HISTORY:
Alright, so ‘Til Tuesday was this cool band from the 80s, known for their hit song “Voices Carry.” They formed in Boston back in 1982, with Aimee Mann on vocals, Robert Holmes on guitar, Joey Pesce on keyboards, and Michael Hausman on drums.

Their big break came when they signed with Epic Records and released their debut album, also called “Voices Carry,” in 1985. That title track blew up, with its catchy melody and Aimee Mann’s distinct voice. The music video, with Aimee Mann sporting that iconic punk hairstyle, was all over MTV.

After that success, they put out a couple more albums, like “Welcome Home” and “Everything’s Different Now,” but they never quite reached the same level of fame as with “Voices Carry.” They had some loyal fans, though, digging their blend of new wave and pop-rock.

But by the early 90s, they called it quits. Aimee Mann went on to have a pretty successful solo career, gaining critical acclaim for her songwriting chops. The rest of the band sort of went their separate ways.

Still, ‘Til Tuesday remains this nostalgic favorite for those who grew up in the 80s. Their music takes you right back to that era of big hair, neon lights, and MTV playing actual music videos.

    LYRICS (Courtesy of AZLyrics.com):

    “Voices Carry”

I’m in the dark, I’d like to read his mind
But I’m frightened of the things I might find
Oh, there must be something he’s thinking of
    To tear him away-a-ay
When I tell him that I’m falling in love
    Why does he say-a-ay

Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry
    Uh-ah

I try so hard not to get upset
Because I know all the trouble I’ll get
Oh, he tells me tears are something to hide
    And something to fear-eh-eh
And I try so hard to keep it inside
    So no one can hear

Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry
    Uh-ah

    Oh!
He wants me, but only part of the time
He wants me, if he can keep me in line

Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Hush hush, shut up now, voices carry
Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Hush hush, darling, she might overhear
    Hush, hush – voices carry
He said shut up – he said shut up
Oh God can’t you keep it down
    Voices carry
    Hush hush, voices carry
