Generational Gaps

“Likewise, you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”” -- 1 Peter 5:5-6

Back in the day. Money doesn’t grow on trees. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.

If you are like me, you can probably picture your parents, grandparents, or even yourself quoting one of these old sayings. They are treasures for sure.

Back in the day—pun intended—most sayings held deeper meaning than what was spoken. While it is true that money does not grow on trees, the lesson behind the classic saying implies the importance of proper budgeting, saving, and the value of fixing something rather than replacing it. The world would be a better place if we applied those same principles to people.

The Apostle Peter teaches in his first book that the younger are to submit to their elders. Boy howdy, haven’t we all taken that out of context at some time or another? Sadly, we often fail to apply Peter’s statement: “All of you be submissive to one another and clothed with humility.” Regardless of language or translation, all means all. A humble heart does not look down on others, no matter one’s age, stage, or circumstance.

I believe the greatest generational gap in my lifetime has been the explosion of the World Wide Web. Those born after 1985 have grown up in a modern tech society. While there are benefits from advancements in technology, the greatest drawback is the ever-expanding chasm between pre- and postmodern tech generations, combined with the rapid replacement of the human heart by artificial intelligence (AI). Just because one reads or listens to something online does not make it true.

    ENTER HUMILITY.

When each of us approaches differences—submitting to one another with humility—we can help bridge the generational gaps. We can also learn a great deal from one another. God gives grace to the humble, and a humble heart trumps pride every time!

By the way, you can teach an old dog new tricks. With the right motivation, anyone can learn something new. Whether you’re an old dog or a young pup, may you never stop growing your humble heart.

    Questions for Reflection:

    1. How can you decrease pride and increase humility in your daily life?

    2. How can you serve and learn from someone from a different generation than yourself?

    3. What is one way you can decrease screen time and engage in a human relationship?
