God in Christ is Approachable

Revelation 21:23 says, “The glory of God illumined [New Jerusalem], and its lamp is the Lamb.”

New JerusalemWithout the Lamb being the lamp, God’s shining would kill us. However, with the redeeming Christ as the lamp, the divine light does not kill us but instead illumines us. First Timothy 6:16 says that God dwells in unapproachable light. In Christ, though, God becomes approachable. Apart from Christ, God’s shining would be a killing, but in Christ God’s shining is an illumining. Because the divine light shines through the Lamb, the Redeemer, it has become lovable and touchable.*

In the gospels we see that the Lord Jesus as a God-Man was very approachable. God alone is unapproachable as we read in 1 Timothy 6, but the Lord told us “no one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). Through the Lord we come to God our Father.

God is in the Lord as the lamp and He is in the Lord as They are on the throne in New Jerusalem. Therefore, “Let us therefore come forward with boldness to the throne of grace that we may receive mercy and find grace for timely help” (Heb. 4:16); come forward both now and in New Jerusalem.
