God Is Not Unjust, So Show Him Your Love
For God is not unjust. He will not forget how hard you have worked for him and how you have shown your love to him by caring for other believers, as you still do. Hebrews 6:10
What a refreshing scripture verse! Through the writer of Hebrews, God confirmed that He doesn’t consider our faithfulness insignificant. Therefore, we must continue to serve Him.
Let’s go back to verse one of this chapter. From there, we’ll see why the author had to put the words God and unjust in the same sentence. I get the sense that immaturity plagued his readers.
So let us stop going over the basic teachings about Christ again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding. Hebrews 6:1
For years, my wife and I served as children’s evangelists. Sometimes, we had children come to the altar every night of the crusade for salvation. They didn’t need to get saved again each night.
But we didn’t discourage them because their salvation would eventually take root in their lives. This chapter encourages its readers to grow in the Lord so that their spirituality can mature.
Surely we don’t need to start again with the fundamental importance of repenting from evil deeds and placing our faith in God. Hebrews 6:1
All spiritual leaders desire growth in those under their leadership. For some reason, the writer had to instruct these students on the basics of Christianity over and over again.
You don’t need further instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. Hebrews 6:2
How Do We Know that God isn’t Unjust?
They couldn’t get past the basics of knowing how just or unjust God was. Nor did they know or understand how much God loved them. I sense the frustration of the writer in the next verse.
And so, God willing, we will move forward to further understanding. Hebrews 6:3
When a people refuse to develop spiritually in the Lord, they find themselves moving away from Him. They move so far away from God they begin considering Him unjust and unloving.
They put themselves in a position of choosing to no longer serve Him. When taking that step, their pride makes it impossible for us to bring them back. Only God’s Spirit can break their pride.
- For it is impossible to bring back to repentance those who were once enlightened—those who have experienced the good things of heaven and shared in the Holy Spirit,
- who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the power of the age to come— and who then turn away from God.
- It is impossible to bring such people back to repentance; by rejecting the Son of God, they themselves are nailing him to the cross once again and holding him up to public shame. Hebrews 6:4-6
The writer of Hebrews understood that his readers could lose out if he sugarcoated God’s instructions. Therefore, he painted a word picture using a pretty graphic illustration.
When the ground soaks up the falling rain and bears a good crop for the farmer, it has God’s blessing. But if a field bears thorns and thistles, it is useless. The farmer will soon condemn that field and burn it. Hebrews 6:7-8

Is the Hebrews Writer Speaking to You?
He spoke the truth, ensuring that no one could accuse him or God of being unjust. In the next verse, however, he did back off a little. He abstained from pointing his finger at anyone.
Dear friends, even though we are talking this way, we really don’t believe it applies to you. We are confident that you are meant for better things, things that come with salvation. Hebrews 6:9
No one needs to do any finger pointing at anyone guilty of what this chapter says. The Holy Spirit will use its words to bring conviction upon people moving in the wrong spiritual direction.
He took us down that trail to tell us that God never does anything unjust. He went on to say that we show love to God by caring for other believers. I think some have a misconception of that.
Some Christians feel that when they do acts of kindness for others, they indirectly involve God. Maybe they think loving God only happens when they give Him an hour a week in church.
They may think reading a few Bible verses each day shows love to Him. Jesus made it clear that when we care for others, especially believers, we do it as unto the Lord.
- For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me. Matthew 25:35-36
- And the King will say, I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me! Matthew 25:40

The Requests of God are not Unjust
Please don’t get me wrong; we should prioritize reading the Word and attending church. But we do them because they benefit us and help us to draw closer to the Lord.
God doesn’t throw us any curve balls because He isn’t unjust. His Word tells us exactly what He expects from us. The next verse says that our Christianity should last our entire lifetime.
Our great desire is that you will keep on loving others as long as life lasts, in order to make certain that what you hope for will come true. Then you will not become spiritually dull and indifferent. Instead, you will follow the example of those who are going to inherit God’s promises because of their faith and endurance. Hebrews 6:11-12
Showing love to God by caring for other believers makes us anything but dull. Also, take note of the twofold progression assigned to every Christian as we walk through this life.
- First, follow the example of those inheriting God’s promises because of their faith and endurance.
- Second, become an example of one inheriting God’s promises because of your faith and endurance.
Lord, no one can convince us that you, God, have the capability of anything unjust or unloving. Help us to show our love for you by caring for other believers.
