Great Is Thy Faithfulness: The Quiet Life of a Faithful Pastor

Some hymns are born in extraordinary moments—times of great joy, deep sorrow, or dramatic change.

Great Is Thy Faithfulness has a different story. Its words grew from a lifetime of noticing God's care in ordinary days and trusting His provision through every season of life.

A Quiet Life of Faith

Behind those familiar words was Thomas O. Chisholm, whose quiet life became a testimony to God's faithfulness. Born in Kentucky in 1866, Chisholm worked as a teacher and journalist before becoming a Methodist minister. His pastoral ministry was brief, however, as health problems eventually forced him to step away.

Through seasons of physical weakness and financial uncertainty, Chisholm learned to recognize God's care in the details of everyday life. That perspective would eventually find its way into the words of Great Is Thy Faithfulness.

The Story Behind Great Is Thy Faithfulness

In 1923, Chisholm wrote a poem inspired by Lamentations 3:22–23: “They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” The words reflected a truth he had come to know personally—that God's mercy does not run out and His care remains constant.

Chisholm shared the poem with his friend William M. Runyan, a musician and composer who wrote the melody for the hymn. Together, the words and music became Great Is Thy Faithfulness, one of the most beloved hymns of the Christian faith.

Why This Hymn Still Resonates

Great Is Thy Faithfulness continues to resonate because it speaks to something deeply familiar: the need to trust God through the ordinary rhythms of life. The words “Morning by morning new mercies I see” express a quiet confidence shaped by years of dependence on God's presence and provision.

We often look for God in life-changing moments, but His care can also be found in the small mercies of everyday life. These quiet reminders of His presence can bring strength, peace, and hope in every season.

A Reflection on Faithfulness

Our culture often measures a life by achievement and recognition, but Thomas Chisholm's story offers a quieter picture of faithfulness. He remained faithful through ordinary days, health struggles, and uncertainty, and that quiet trust eventually gave the world a hymn that has encouraged millions.

God's faithfulness does not depend on our circumstances or accomplishments.

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)

His faithfulness remains constant through every season. And that is why we can still sing with confidence:

“Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me.”
