He Quiets me with His Song

“The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3: 17
“We are living in unprecedented times.” I have lost count of the number of times I have heard that phrase over the last several years. Each day brings a reminder that life is far beyond my control. It is messy, it is stressful and it can cause our thoughts to wage a full blown assault on our minds!
Tough circumstances can make true rest illusive. Whether it’s coping with illness of your own or in your family, financial stress, relationship breakdowns, prodigal children and grandchildren…the list goes on and on. Even when you lie in bed and close your eyes, true rest can escape you. Even while asleep you are bombarded with all of the “what ifs” that come steamrolling in to rob you of your peace and joy.
In the midst of the stress, in the midst of the chaos, in the midst of the voices that are clamoring to be heard above all others…
“The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3: 17
I was reminded of this truth a couple of nights ago. It was late and I was lying in bed, allowing a lot of anxious thoughts to cause peace and rest to become illusive. Holy Spirit reminded of Zephaniah 3:17 – a verse I have “known” for decades. As I thought about this verse I received a text from my son. He was doing “daddy duty” with one of his little girls. He sent a video of her sweet face so I could get my gramma fix, I guess, but what struck me were his words that I could hear in the background of the video and his gestures as he held his miracle.
He stroked her face and told her how much he loved her. He told her how beautiful she was and comforted her. Even at just a couple of days old, she knew her daddy’s voice and followed his voice intently with her eyes. She received his love and comfort as she rested in his arms. She knew she was safe and loved.
“The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3: 17
The Lord reminded me that HE is my Father and He too sings songs of love over me to quiet me and to comfort me. He reminded me that circumstances may be unpredictable and out of my control, but HIS love is faithful, deep, steady and greater than my human mind can mentally conceive. He reminded me that His love fills even the tiniest corners of my heart as well as holds the expanse of the universe in its place.
His love quiets my mind.
I can sometimes underestimate the power of my Father’s love for me. It cannot be contained but I sometimes try to measure it and put it in a box. I lose sight of our Father-daughter relationship and try to run ahead and attempt to handle things on my own terms and in my own way. My FATHER gave me a visual of what His love looks like when my son sent that video.
My Father’s love brings quiet to my life.
His song quiets me
His tender hand strokes my anxious mind and brings peace
His soft voice encourages me that everything will be alright because HE is with me
His strong arms pull me close when I need comfort
He carries me when I can’t make it in my own power
He never sleeps or slumbers – HE is ALWAYS at the ready to help me!
His words bring hope and builds faith in me
His love brings strength when I am weary
He rejoices over me because He knows my steps
In the chaos of my days, I will listen for HIS voice and let Him sing over me.
I will rest as he wipes every tear, traces every smile, calms my breathing, holds me close and delights in me.
Father, as you sing over us, we quiet ourselves in Your presence and receive Your love. Amen.
