Healthy Eating Tips While On The Road With Kids
Sponsored Post
If you’re anything like our family, you’ve probably had your fair share of adventures on the road with your little ones. In a year we go for a minimum of 4 family road trips and I’ve learned a thing or two about keeping those hungry tummies happy while on the go. I know that it can be tough to find healthy food options on the road, especially when you’re short on time. But with a little planning, it’s definitely possible to keep your kids eating healthy on road trips. In today’s blog post, I’m excited to share some of my favorite healthy eating tips and ideas while on the road with kids.
Plan ahead.
Before you go on the road, take some time and make a list of snacks that are easy to eat and don’t require a lot of preparation, snacks that your family enjoys eating. I like to involve my kids in this, we write the list together and even go shopping with them.
Choose Snacks that Satisfy
When you’re on the road, you’ll want to pack snacks that satisfy but are also easy to eat and don’t require a lot of preparation. Some good options include:
- Fruits: Fruits make a delicious, hydrating treat that’s mess-free. Pack pre-cut fruits like watermelon, apple slices, or grapes in portable containers.
- Veggie Sticks: Carrot and celery sticks with a side of hummus make for a crunchy, satisfying snack that’s rich in vitamins.
- Trail Mix: Create your own trail mix with a combination of nuts, seeds, dried fruit, and a sprinkle of chocolate chips for that sweet and salty balance.
- Yogurt/Squeezable pouches: Individual yogurt cups or squeezable pouches are easy to handle and make for a nutritious snack with probiotics.
Healthy Meal Options
If you’re going to be on the road for a long time, you’ll also want to pack some nutritious meals for your kids. Some good options include:
- Wraps: Prepare wholesome wraps with protein, some greens, and a tasty spread. Roll them up for an easy-to-eat, no-mess meal.
- Sandwiches: Make your own sandwiches; cut them into fun shapes for added excitement.
- Salad: Whip up a pasta salad with whole-grain pasta, veggies, and a light vinaigrette. It’s a filling, cold option that’s perfect for road trips.
Stay Hydrated
Don’t forget about hydration! Water is the best choice, pack plenty of water to keep your kids hydrated.
Take breaks.
If you’re going to be on the road for a long time, it’s important to take breaks so that your kids can get out and move around. This will help them burn off energy and avoid getting restless.
Make it fun.
Eating healthy can be fun for kids, especially if you make it creative. Try cutting fruits and vegetables into fun shapes, or packing them in bento boxes. You can also make games out of eating healthy, such as seeing who can eat the most fruits and vegetables in a day.
Get meals ready before the trip:
Before you hit the road, it’s crucial to make sure your meals are ready to go. This involves several steps that help ensure you have nutritious and delicious food throughout your journey, this includes:
- Investing in a good-quality cooler with ice packs to keep things like fruits, yogurt, etc fresh and safe to eat.
- Pre-portion snacks in containers, so it’s easy to serve and eat in the car.
- Keep food at the right temperature, so it doesn’t go bad, and always wash your hands before eating, or use special hand wipes.
If you’re planning a road trip to Durban, South Africa, be sure to rent a car at the airport. This will give you the flexibility to explore the city at your own pace and make stops along the way.
