Hold Fast Our Confidence and Hope — Hebrews 3:6b

    Aug 30, 2025 21

In verse 6a, we saw that because of Jesus we are God’s house: His people, His family, His dwelling place. But verse 6 doesn’t end there. It continues with both a promise and a challenge.

    Hebrews 3:6b says:

“And we are his house if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.

    The Call to Hold Fast

The writer isn’t suggesting that we save ourselves by holding on tightly enough. Our grip strength never earns salvation. Salvation is a gift of God’s grace, secured through Jesus’ perfect life, sacrificial death, and triumphant resurrection.

But while Jesus does the saving, we are called to cling to Him. Think of a lifesaver pulling you up out of the ocean. The rescuer does all the work – but your role is to cling to the one who saves.

So the call here is not “do more to be saved,” but don’t let go of the Saviour. Hold fast your confidence. Hold fast your hope.

    Confidence and Boasting in Hope

Notice what we’re called to hold fast: not our own achievements, not our own goodness, not our own strength – but our confidence and boasting in our hope.

That hope is Christ Himself. Our confidence is in Him. Our boasting is in what He has done. His perfect life. His sacrificial death. His victorious resurrection.

When the storms of life come, when doubts creep in, when sin weighs us down, our confidence is not in ourselves but in Jesus. And that makes all the difference.

    Living It Out

So how do we actually hold fast in daily life?

    • Pay attention to the voices you listen to. Distractions, notifications, and the noise of the world can drown out the voice of Jesus. Create rhythms that help you hear His Word and remember His promises.
    • Stay connected to His people. You are God’s house together, not on your own. Encourage others, and let them encourage you.
    • Cling to hope in the struggles. When suffering or temptation comes, remind yourself of the hope you have in Christ: forgiveness for the past, strength for the present, and resurrection for the future.

    The Challenge and the Comfort

Verse 6 challenges us: Are we holding fast? Are we clinging to Christ? But it also comforts us: if we are holding fast, it’s evidence that we really do belong to His household. And because He is faithful, He will keep His people to the end.

So don’t let go. Don’t drift back. Don’t be distracted. Hold fast your confidence. Hold fast your hope. Hold fast to Christ.

    Reflection

What practical steps could you take today to help you hold fast your confidence and hope in Jesus?

        The Gift of... Accounting?

While studying the topic of spiritual gifts this week, I stumbled upon a curious path and thought I would share my findings.Probably, when you think of spiritual gifts, accounting is not the first one that jumps to mind. I promise you that no one gets into ministry because they have a burning passion for budgets and spreadsheets. Still, as I said in a lecture to some college ministry students a few years ago at Oklahoma Christian University, "You can’t do any more ministry than you can afford, s
