How Obvious is God to You?
Some things are just obvious, aren’t they?
“Thank you, Captain Obvious.”
That’s how I feel about the existence of God. In my eyes, the existence of God is irrefutable because His handiwork and power are just so … well, obvious. I look around at the world, and I see the work of God. I read books and articles about science and nature, and I can’t help but read facts that point to an Intelligent Designer—One with purpose—behind it all.
I know that sounds simplistic or naïve to those who refuse to believe in a Supreme Being they can’t see. But His work is all around us if we just choose to open our eyes and look. You won’t see God Himself, but you will see the evidence of God.
“For his invisible attributes, that is, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what he has made” (Rom. 1:20).
There’s a beautiful oxymoron in that passage—two contradictory words placed together—that makes a profound statement. “His invisible attributes … clearly seen.” The all-powerful, all-knowing, sovereign God of the universe is on display when you consider creation functions with purpose. Consider this: Animals inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. Plants take that carbon dioxide and convert it to oxygen. That symbiotic relationship—the way both groups support each other—didn’t just happen by chance. It points to an Intelligent Designer who crafts with purpose.
The evidence of God is there. We just need to open our eyes.
Take a moment and note the items around you that have the color blue in them. For me, blue is in the spine of several books on the shelf next to me. It’s in the shirt I am wearing. Three lights on my computer are lit blue.
The color blue was there all along. We didn’t notice it until we were looking for it.
It’s the same with God. He’s there. He’s always been there. We just need to look.
The God who created with purpose is also there for you. And He has a purpose for you. I can’t tell you the specifics of that purpose, but I can say it includes embracing His love, grace, and forgiveness. His purpose for you includes walking with Him. You don’t have to see Him to know He is right there with you. He is at work in your life—whether you see it or not.
