In Search of Life’s Meaning: Studying Ecclesiastes Part 1

    Read Ecclesiastes 1-2

    Who am I?

    What am I?

    Why am I here?

Is there any point to it all?

If you’ve ever asked any of these questions, you’re not alone. Life can be confusing at the best of times, and let’s face it, the good times don’t always roll. Relationships can go sour, finances can be stretched and hopes can be shattered. How are we to cope when we don’t really understand what it’s all for?

Solomon walked this path long before any of us. Like many in positions of privilege today, everything his heart desired was there for the taking. And yet, none of it satisfied. Wine, houses, gardening, projects, slaves, wives and concubines galore all amounted to nothing more than a chasing after the wind.

“Meaningless! Meaningless! Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless,” he cried. In his view, humanity scurried around with its labors, while the earth continued to turn on its axis, paying no mind. The sun rises, then sets, winds blow and streams flow, but no one remembers all those generations past who scurried about to make ends meet.

Then Solomon considered wisdom and folly. On their own, they offered little more than all his other pursuits, but a sliver of hope pierced his gloom. “A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil.  This is from the hand of God, for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness.”

In God, life’s purpose begins to take shape.
