In Spirit to Satisfy the Law at the Gates

Revelation 21:12 tells us New Jerusalem has “twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names inscribed, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel.”

Israel here represents the law of the Old Testament, indicating that the law is represented at the gates of the New Jerusalem. The law watches and observes to insure that all the communications, the comings in and the goings out, of the holy city meet all its requirements. Thus, all the communications of this city are according to the law of God.*

New JerusalemThe law is a governing factor in the Old Testament and grace and divine life are governing in the New Testament. Grace is with our human spirit (Gal. 6:18). When we live in our spirit, which is one with the divine Spirit, Romans 8:4 declares “the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the spirit.”

Thus, to be born of the Spirit in our spirit (John 3:6) matches the requirement of the law at the gates of New Jerusalem. And, to be in spirit is to be in resurrection which is to be in the present, spiritual (but humanly invisible) reality of New Jerusalem.
