Very few people my age are retired, but I find that my generation talks about retirement a lot. My peers joke about the day when they can unplug their computers, stop the daily grind, and spend the days drinking iced tea on their deck overlooking the golf course.
Baby boomers are turning age 65 at a rate of around 10,000 people a day, selling their homes and moving into retirement communities often far away from family. What is the issue with this?
In the past several decades our society has experienced some huge changes. Divorce has become commonplace. Custody battles and split families leave younger generations with weak connections to the older, more experienced family members. Some families may all live near each other but may not be allowed to have relationships. Children lose the influence of dad, grandparents, aunts and uncles.
Divorce and our view of retirement are two of the reasons that the younger generations are being mentored, discipled, and influenced by the internet, college professors, and their own peers. When leisure takes the place of leadership, the next generation is left to figure things out for themselves. You can make a difference in the life of someone, if you are intentional.
You are needed to invest in the lives of those following in your footsteps.
You are needed to encourage, disciple, and model.
You are needed to bridge the gap for families.
You are needed to pray for the next generation and to teach them to pray.
People may seem to be impressed with boats, houses, and cars but what really impresses them is the impact you have on other lives. Be intentional. Allow your life lessons to be put to good use. Share your struggles and victories and allow God to speak through you into the next generation.

Does not long life bring understanding?
Your long life can be a blessing. Your wisdom can make a difference. When we stand before the Lord and He asks us about our time on earth, He isn’t just asking about our time before we retire. He wants to say about our whole life: “Well done, good and faithful servant”.
