It's Veterans Day!
Today is Veterans Day, so break out the Stars and Stripes and fly them proudly.
The first Armistice Day–on November 11, 1919–marked the one-year anniversary of the end of World War I, which was said to be “the war to end all wars.”
But tragically, there will still be wars in the future, as Jesus said that one of the signs of the last days would be hearing of wars and rumors of wars (Matthew 24:6).
In fact, that will be my topic at our Bible study tomorrow night in Orange County and at our services Sunday morning at Harvest. I will talk about the final battle of Armageddon.
Bravery on the battlefield
That said, today is a day when we honor those American men and women who have served in our military, and they certainly deserve it.
Scripture says of those in authority, specifically military and police:
“For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.” (Romans 13:4)
The soldier or police officer as God’s minister? Absolutely.
That is not to say that every act done by every American soldier or police officer is necessarily right under all circumstances, but it does mean that God has established an authority structure, and the military is a part of that.
So today, thank someone who has protected our freedoms as a member of the United States military. And thank God that they have put themselves in harm’s way for you and me.
