Knowing Ourselves in Christ and Discerning Our Path Through the Truth
2 Peter 1:1 ESV
Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:
By examining Peter’s understanding of himself and his exhortation to the brothers and sisters in the church at that time, I received several important reminders. One is that I need to have a very clear and accurate understanding of my identity, just as the apostle Peter did. I, too, have been redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus. I, too, am who I am because of Christ. Without Christ’s grace and redemption, I would not be who I am today. Therefore, I do not belong to myself, but to Jesus Christ. I am possessed by Him and am a servant of Jesus Christ. I exist because of Christ, I belong to Him, and I am to live for Him. Therefore, I should continually ask myself: Am I living according to His will? Am I living a life that pleases Him?
2 Peter 1:16-19 ESV
16 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” 18 we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. 19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,
This reminds me that I need to pay greater attention to the Bible and to God’s Word itself, more than to my own or others’ spiritual experiences and encounters. There are many spiritual phenomena in this world, but not all of them come from God; some are also the work of Satan. Therefore, everything must ultimately be judged and discerned according to God’s Word in Scripture. We are to live according to truth, not according to spiritual experiences or feelings. Otherwise, it is very easy to fall into the dangers of mysticism or gnosticism.
