Look Up to the Mountains

“I look up to the mountains—does my help come from there?” (Psalm 121:1 NLT)
TODAY’S ENCOURAGEMENT:
Some people find peace by visiting the beach. Other people look for solace by spending time on the lake. I find renewal when I go up into the mountains. I love to spend time in the snow-capped peaks while breathing in the crisp, fresh air.
My spirit soars in lofty places, and I feel closer to God as I look up to the mountains. The mountains also inspire me in my writing. On a trip to Colorado a few years back, I penned a poem about my mountain top feelings.
The Aspens by Yvonne M. Morgan
Take me to where the tall aspens grow
To the mountain tops sprinkled with snow
I want to hear the wind blow thru the pines
To feel the presence of God, Holy and Divine
The Aspens with their bark of papery white
Stretching their limbs to the heavenly heights
To hear the thunder echo across the hills
Bending and swaying to the Father’s will
Birds rest in your shimmering leaves of green
Deep in the forest, they nest safe and unseen
Sheltered within the mountain’s peak,
The Lord’s protection we all do seek
As your leaves turn gold in falls fading light,
Alive with color, you offer a delightful sight
Adorned with an eternal elegance and grace
Through you, God shows me to slow my pace
Winter snow bend your lofty boughs low
Your roots protected as winter gales blow
Lost deep within winter’s dark days,
Praise God for still lighting our ways
Take me to where the tall aspens do grow
I want to feel close to God in nature’s glow
Protected by God’s almighty hands
Safe and secure within His plans
Look up to the Mountains
Now back to the bible verse. I picture David writing this psalm as he gazes at the jagged ridges surrounding him. Like me, he seems to find peace in this setting. The majesty and strength of the mountains remind us of God’s mighty power. The unchanging peaks recap for us that our God is also never changing.

From David’s day until the present, many people gazed up at the mountains and pondered the same question: “Where does my help come from today?” We find the answer in the next verse in Psalm 121:2: “My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth” (ESV).
Our help comes from the Lord, the One who made the mountains. Next time you see a mountain, remember that our Lord will always help you.
Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for being the mountain we can run to in times of trouble. Thank You for nature which surrounds us to remind us of You. Help us look up to the mountain to you when we face trials and tribulations. In Jesus Christ’s name, I pray. Amen.
