Looking for a Sign?

Bible

I have often hinted that it would be really convenient if God would just give me “a sign”.  You know, like write in the clouds or have a pigeon drop a note at my door.  Anything obvious would be helpful–especially when faced with a difficult or important decision.

But it’s never happened.

When Noah sent out a dove after the rain stopped and it came back with an olive leaf in her beak, he knew that God’s promises had been fulfilled.  It was more than a sign–it was a fact.  Visible, tangible evidence that the waters were receding and that their days of floating were almost over. 40 days and 40 nights. A flood. Devastation. Loss.

And a rainbow.

Another sign.  Proof that God would keep His promise in the future.

“Why did this happen?” you say.  You can read the whole story in the book of Genesis, Chapters 6-9, but it all really began many years before in Chapter 3 when satan said to the woman, “Did God really say…?”  When Adam and Eve made the choice to question the power and authority of their creator everything changed.

Sin entered the world He created.  Man chose sin over obedience.  And there were (always are) consequences.

But they were not abandoned to their selfish desires–no.  In His love and mercy, He gave them signs and warnings.  Missed opportunities.  But they refused to listen.

They saw the signs. They just ignored them.

I don’t ever want to forget what a privilege it is to own a copy of the written word of God.  We live at a time when we have easy access to God’s Written Word and yet…

It sits idly on a shelf.

I DO have a sign.  Thousands of them.  They’re all written in the pages of this ta biblia ta hagia, collection of “Holy Books“,

“…inspired by God, and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God my be complete, equipped for every good work.”  2 Timothy 3:16-7

I’ve always loved books, but this Book is not just any book–it is a book that reveals,

  1. “The Way”.  The way to the Father.  The way of salvation.  The way He wants you to walk, to talk, and to experience this wonderful world He has created.
  2. “The Truth”.  THE.TRUTH.  Period.  There is no other source of absolute truth.  He is the author, sustainer and fulfillment of truth.
  3. “The Life”.  Life as He planned it for you.  Yes, you. (Read Psalm 139) He wants to give you a life that is filled with meaning and purpose and HOPE.

You see, the Bible is HIStory.  It is how He has chosen to reveal Himself and His plan for mankind.

You just have to be willing to follow the signs.
