Navigating the abortion issue: An ethical dilemma in a conservative society

In a historic and far-reaching decision, the U.S. Supreme Court officially reversed Roe v. Wade on June 24, 2022.

It proclaimed that the constitutional right to abortion, upheld for nearly 50 years, no longer exists.

The decision effectively curtails abortion rights in almost half of the states, leading to immediate rollbacks and anticipating further restrictions. Consequently, large portions of the country will lack access to abortion services.

It reignited debates over granting women an unequivocal right to terminate pregnancies during the initial three months. These rights also become more limited during the second trimester.

Opposing camps on the abortion issue

The abortion topic is one of the most contentious and emotionally charged topics in modern society.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports: "Around 73 million induced abortions take place worldwide each year.

Six out of 10 (61%) of all unintended pregnancies, and 3 out of 10 (29%) of all pregnancies, end in induced abortion."

On one side, we have the pro-choice advocates who argue for a woman's right to make decisions about her own body, including whether or not to terminate a pregnancy.

Conversely, we have the pro-life advocates who believe that life begins at conception and that every unborn child has the right to live.

THE PRO-CHOICE ADVOCACY

Pro-choice advocates claim abortion restrictions violate their constitutional rights to privacy and liberty, protected under the Fourteenth Amendment. This guards against deprivation of life, liberty, or property without due process of law.

The advocates, hailing from varied religious backgrounds, advocate for the separation of religious beliefs from public policies.

They emphasize that personal religious convictions must not dictate the reproductive choices of others, safeguarding individual freedoms and upholding religious diversity.

Moreover, they firmly believe that reproductive choices should be solely left to the woman involved and emphasize women's autonomy, bodily integrity, and right to privacy.

1. Reproductive rights. Pro-choice supporters emphasize that women's right to control their reproductive health is essential to achieving gender equality.

They believe limiting access to abortion infringes upon a woman's right to self-determination.

2. Safe and legal access. Advocates argue that making abortion illegal does not eliminate it. Prohibition merely drives it underground, making it dangerous for women seeking the procedure.

They emphasize that legalizing abortion ensures safe and regulated access, reducing health risks for women.

3. Complex circumstances. Pro-choice advocates acknowledge that the decision to have an abortion is often complex and deeply personal

They believe each individual's circumstances should be considered without judgment or interference from others.

4. Overpopulation and resources. Some pro-choice proponents argue that access to safe and legal abortion can help address overpopulation concerns, straining resources, and the environment.

THE PRO-LIFE ADVOCACY

Pro-Life supporters maintain that humans lack the inherent right to terminate the life of another human being, viewing the fetus as a living entity.

Guided by their Christian faith, they hold the sanctity of life in high regard and are unwaveringly devoted to safeguarding the unborn.

For Christians, each human life is deemed precious and invaluable, deserving protection from the very instant of conception until the natural end.

Their stance against abortion is not politically motivated but rooted in moral principles.

It is founded upon the belief in the fundamental dignity bestowed upon every human individual.

Advocates of the Pro-Life movement firmly assert that life commences at conception, an intrinsic right to life for every unborn child.

Their emphasis lies in opposing the termination of pregnancies and upholding the sacredness of human existence.

It stems from a deep sense of responsibility to preserve life, cherishing it as a sacred and irreplaceable part of the human experience.

1. Right to life. Pro-life supporters believe that life is valuable from conception, and therefore, abortion is equivalent to ending a human life.

They assert that every unborn child has the right to life and protection under the law.

2. Adoption and support. Instead of abortion, pro-life advocates promote adoption as a compassionate and viable alternative.

They emphasize the importance of supporting pregnant women, providing resources, and creating a supportive environment for both mother and child.

3. Medical advancements. Some pro-life proponents argue that advancements in medical technology have shown the humanity of unborn children even in the early stages of development, reinforcing the importance of protecting their lives.

4. Ethical concerns. Pro-life supporters raise ethical concerns about ending a potential human life, asserting that society should prioritize life and its preservation.

THE ABORTION ISSUE: Finding common ground

The abortion controversy involves pro-choice and pro-life advocacies with seemingly opposing views.

However, finding common ground is crucial for constructive dialogue.

Areas of agreement and compromise include promoting comprehensive sex education to reduce unwanted pregnancies.

Providing affordable healthcare for women and supporting pregnant women in challenging situations is vital.

Additionally, promoting research and open dialogue is crucial to making well-informed choices about the medical, social, and psychological dimensions of abortion.

By acknowledging each side's legitimate beliefs, society can work towards comprehensive solutions that respect reproductive rights while addressing the sanctity of life.

Potential solutions

Finding common ground in the abortion debate involves addressing concerns from both pro-choice and pro-life perspectives.

  • Expanding access to affordable contraception to reduce unintended pregnancies.
  • Developing support programs for pregnant women facing difficult circumstances.
  • Promoting respectful and open dialogue to foster understanding between advocates.
  • Exploring comprehensive policies that respect a woman's right to choose while working to decrease the need for abortion.

By focusing on these shared goals, individuals from both sides can collaborate on solutions that aim to address the complexities surrounding the abortion issue.

The Temple of the Holy Spirit

"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own." - 1 Corinthians 6:19

In the First Epistle to the Corinthians, Apostle Paul imparts teachings and guidance to the Christian community in Corinth.

He addresses sexual immorality and stresses the believers' bodies as sacred vessels of the Holy Spirit, and focuses on the importance of sexual purity.

Paul reminds the Corinthians that their bodies are not mere vessels for physical pleasure but are instead sacred and holy.

With this claim, the Holy Spirit dwells within them, which is seen as a result of their faith in Jesus Christ.

He stresses that believers are no longer their own but have been "bought at a price."

The concept suggests that through Christ's sacrificial death, believers have been redeemed and entered into a renewed connection with God.

As a result, they are urged to honor God spiritually and by treating their physical bodies as dwelling places for the Holy Spirit.

In essence, this passage underscores the spiritual significance of the human body for believers.

It encourages them to refrain from immoral behavior, including sexual sins, and to treat their bodies with respect and purity.

God's Word is clear about the abortion issue. Understanding their bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit emphasizes the call to follow God's will and glorify Him in all aspects of life.

Besides, we live in a temporary and sinful world, and eternal life beckons for those who have spent their earthly existence in holiness and righteousness.
