New Jerusalem: No Outer Court, No Holy Place

Revelation 21:16 tells us that an angel “measured the city with the reed to a length of twelve thousand stadia; the length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.” New Jerusalem is a cube!

New JerusalemThe Old Testament tabernacle and temple had three sections – an outer court, a holy place, and the holy of holies. In both of them the holy of holies was a cube and the holy place was not a cube. This indicates that New Jerusalem is the eternal holy of holies.

New Jerusalem has no need of the outer court. The spiritual reality of the city replaces all the old shadows and the perfection of the city eliminates the need for the functions of the outer court and holy place.

Examples: New Jerusalem has the Lamb on the throne as the reality of all the Old Testament offerings (Heb. 10:5-10). God is the light—there is “no need of the light of a lamp” (21:23) which was in the holy place. And Christ as the real food replaced the table of bread in the holy place.

In Hebrews 4 and 10 we are exhorted to come forward to the throne of grace, to the holy of holies. This is our present experience of New Jerusalem. This will be enriched and unchanging in the future, but don’t wait—come forward now!
