No Fooling Around—September 20 Bible Reading Plan - Denise Pass

I Ain't Nobody's Fool

No Fooling Around

No one wants to be a fool, yet we live in a culture full of folly. And we can be naive or fooled if we are not careful. But there is a way out. As we ask God for wisdom, He promises to answer. No fooling around.

Bible Reading of the Day: Proverbs 26

“Like snow in summer and rain at harvest, honor is inappropriate for a fool” (Proverbs 26:1).

Honor is inappropriate for a fool . . . and our culture honors fools. I know that sounds harsh, but let’s see what the definition of a fool is. In Psalm 14:1(a) it says, “The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good.”

No Fooling Around—Our Foolish Culture

Our culture wants to remove the mottos, “In God we trust” and “Under God” from our currency. Sounds pretty foolish to me. Removing God’s influence in our government or way of life has taken a dramatic culture in our school system and society.

In Proverbs 26, Solomon instructs on the characteristics of a fool and the dangers of trusting in one. Webster defines a fool as, “a person lacking in judgment or prudence”. Fools are wise in their own eyes (Proverbs 26:12) and repeat their folly (Proverbs 26:11).

No Fooling Around—Seeking Wise Counsel

Solomon warns us that we will suffer if we trust in a fool, but he gives us counsel on how to deal with them:

Proverbs 26:4-5, “Don’t answer a fool according to his foolishness or you’ll be like him yourself. 5 Answer a fool according to his foolishness or he’ll become wise in his own eyes.”

When we answer a fool according to their own understanding, we are not reasoning from wisdom and they will remain in their folly. But when we reveal the folly according to God’s standard, the fool can become wise.

Scripture of the Day: Proverbs 26:18-19

“18 Just as damaging as a madman shooting a deadly weapon 19 is someone who lies to a friend and then says, “I was only joking.”

Application

  • Walk in wisdom and help others too, as well.
