Our Position in Christ: a New Creation
Second Corinthians 5:17 says “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” This is the position for everyone who has believed in the resurrected Jesus Christ, who has received Him as the Savior. We are “in Christ” and we are “a new creation.”
Many other verses in the Bible speak about our being in Christ. First Corinthians 1:29b-30a says that it is “of God that you are in Christ Jesus.” It is not from our initiative nor by our ability. This new position is “of God.”
Other verses which are about us being in Christ include Romans 6:11, 23; 8:1,2; and Galatians 2:26, 27; 3:14, 26, 28. In Christ we are the new creation, of which New Jerusalem at the center of the the new heaven and new earth is the fullness and culmination.
This is our position; we have been separated from the old creation and have a standing in the new creation. Yet, Colossians 1:28 shows our need to become “full-grown in Christ.” We have entered the new creation but still have the need to be saturated with it. We need to grow in Christ to fully match New Jerusalem.
