Praying for the Schoolgirls of Kachia: Nigeria's Forgotten Daughters
## What Happened
On April 26, 2026, a group of Christian schoolgirls were traveling from Akwando village to Kachia town in Kaduna State, southern Nigeria — simply trying to get to school after a holiday break. Less than ten minutes into the journey, armed gunmen ambushed their vehicle, opened fire, and abducted several of the children into the surrounding bush.
One student, **Purity Babangida**, was shot and killed while attempting to escape. Fifteen other students managed to jump from the vehicle and trekked for hours through the bush before reaching nearby communities. The following students remain among those abducted:
- Augustina Muntari
- Happy Muntari
- Favour Tanimu
- Patience Joseph
- Peace Irimiya
- Bishara Irimiya
This attack was not random. According to field reporting by TruthNigeria, it is part of a documented series of at least seven ambushes along the Akwando–Kachia road since January 2026 alone — and the first in that series to specifically target schoolchildren.

## Why Are Christians Being Targeted?
To pray meaningfully, we need to understand what is happening in Nigeria.
**Nigeria is the most dangerous country in the world for Christians.** According to Open Doors' 2026 World Watch List, of the 4,849 Christians killed for their faith worldwide last year, 3,490 — over 70 percent — were in Nigeria. Put simply: more Christians are killed in Nigeria than in every other country on earth combined.
The violence comes primarily from two sources:
**ISWAP (Islamic State West Africa Province)** is a terrorist organization that split from Boko Haram in 2016 and is affiliated with ISIS. It operates across northern Nigeria and the surrounding region, explicitly targeting Christian communities, their properties, and their children. In 12 states of northern Nigeria, Islamic law has been implemented, making Christians second-class citizens where conversion from Islam can be severely punished.
**Fulani militants** — Islamic extremists among the Fulani people — have been carrying out coordinated attacks on Christian farming communities in Nigeria's Middle Belt for years. Christians are 2.7 times more likely to be targeted and killed in Fulani attacks than Muslims.
The abduction of schoolgirls follows a tragically familiar pattern. Since the infamous 2014 Chibok kidnapping — when over 270 girls were abducted by Boko Haram, forcibly converted to Islam, and forced into marriage — this tactic of targeting Christian female students has continued. These girls are taken not only for ransom, but to be weaponized against the faith community they come from.
This is not a distant political conflict. This is the suffering of our brothers and sisters in Christ.

## A Prayer for the Girls of Kachia
*Based on Open Doors' prayer guide for Nigeria*
Heavenly Father,
We come before You today with heavy hearts, lifting up the schoolgirls of Kachia — Augustina, Happy, Favour, Patience, Peace, and Bishara — and all who suffered on that road on April 26. They were simply going to school. And yet violence found them.
**Lord, may the comfort of Your Holy Spirit rest upon every girl who experienced this trauma.** For those who escaped — who jumped from the truck and fled through the bush for hours — may Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, guard their hearts and minds. May the fear and the horror they witnessed not define them. Reach into the deep places of their souls, and heal what human hands cannot.
**We pray especially for the family of Purity Babangida.** A daughter. A student. Gone. Lord, You know the grief of a parent who holds a child's empty place at the table. Meet that family in their unbearable loss. Speak what only You can speak. Fill the void that no human comfort can reach, with the reality of Your presence.
**Father, we cry out for the girls who have not yet come home.** Wherever they are right now, You see them. You have not forgotten them. We ask that You open a way of escape, guide the steps of those who search, and bring each one safely back to her family. Protect them from harm. Sustain them in fear. And let them know, even now, that they are not alone.
**We pray for Nigeria — for the day when religious freedom is no longer a dream but a reality.** May the day come swiftly when Christians in Nigeria can worship freely, praise Your name openly, and share the Gospel without fear of death. We ask that You change the hearts of those in power — that justice would flow like a river, and that those who inflict violence on Your people would be held accountable before You and before the law.
**Above all, Lord — we pray for the perseverance of our brothers and sisters in Nigeria.** In the face of relentless persecution, may their faith not waver. May the Church in Nigeria not be silenced, but strengthened. May their suffering not be in vain, but become the seed of a great harvest — a witness to the nations that no power on earth can extinguish the light of Christ.
*God, we grieve with our brothers and sisters in Nigeria who endure such unthinkable violence. Be a strong shield and a rock for those who are displaced; be a comfort to those who grieve the loss of loved ones; pour out Your Spirit upon Nigeria.*
In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord,
**Amen.**
