Reconnected Sealed Spirit - Episode 11 - NewCREEations

We are spiritual beings. We are a spirit that has a soul which is living in a physical body. Because our spirit is really the core of who we are as human beings it is important to understand a bit more about our spirits as believers too. In fact, God is also very concerned for our spiritual well being.

Since it’s important to God, it would be wise to make understanding our spirits a priority in our walk with him.

In the Garden of Eden God made mankind perfect. After God breathed his spirit into Adam as the sixth day of creation ended God looked around at everything he had made, including Adam, and said that it was very good.

Then God told Adam not to eat any of the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. If he did, God said he’d die that very day.

As we know, Adam & Eve did eat fruit from that tree, but yet Adam lived to be 130 years old. So what did God mean when he said Adam would die that very day?

God meant that Adam and Eve would be spiritually cut off from the source of spiritual life. As we talked about in an earlier episode we are spiritual beings. We are a spirit that has a soul which is living in a physical body.

Adam and Eve were spiritual beings connected to God in the Garden. At the fall their spirits, which is truly who they are, were detached from God and his life-giving power.

As a result of the fall the only thing we can get from Adam is our physical, natural lives. We still have a spirit because that’s fundamentally how we humans are built. But our spirits are born dead and disconnected from the source of life, God himself.

Searching for Life-Giving Power

And that’s why so many people tap into so much spiritual stuff. They are searching for that life-giving power.

But there’s only one source of spiritual power that will truly make us alive again. Fortunately for us Jesus came to provide a way to reconnect to that source.

Paul said it this way in 1 Corinthians 15:45.

And so it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.

When he says, “the last Adam,” Paul is referring to Jesus.

Jesus said that the process of reconnecting to the spiritual life-source is really starting over completely from scratch. When he was talking to Nicodemus Jesus used the analogy of the birth process when we first came into this world. Only this time instead of being born of flesh we’re born of water and Spirit.

Spirit Sealed by God

Here’s something wild to think about. When we become believers, not only are we reconnected to the spiritual source of life, but that connection is actually sealed in place. As a believer your spirit is sealed with the Holy Spirit

In Him [Jesus] you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory. — Ephesians 1:13-14

When we trust in Jesus and believe in him and what he did on our behalf at the cross and through his resurrection, that connection to spiritual life is vacuum sealed and protected by God himself.

In the first century Rome was the dominant power. In that day the penalty for breaking a seal of the Roman empire was crucifixion. Upside down. That was some significant authority and power behind a Roman seal. And people understood that to break the seal of Rome was to suffer the wrath of Roman punishment.

The seal on our now alive spirits guaranteeing that connection to our source of spiritual life is backed up by God himself. And there is no greater authority or power anywhere.

2 Corinthians 1:21-22 says, “Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.”

That means the Holy Spirit has now sealed us and guarantees our that spirits are perfect and continually connected to God’s life-giving power for all eternity.

It doesn’t get any better than that.
