Redemption for New Jerusalem (4)

The prior three posts clearly show from the New Testament that we have received redemption including forgiveness of sin. Why then does the Lord Jesus speak of a future redemption in Luke 21:27-28 saying we “will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. And…your redemption is drawing near”?

New JerusalemRomans 8:23 answers this question. “We ourselves also, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan in ourselves, eagerly awaiting sonship, the redemption of our body.”

Based on the redemption accomplished by the death of Christ, the Spirit has imparted the divine life into our human spirt. “That which is born of the Spirit is spirit” (John 3:6). This life is spreading into our soul to renew us but our physical body remains a body “of death” (Rom. 7:24).

The redemption of our body is described in Philippians 3:21: our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ “will transfigure the body of our humiliation to be conformed to the body of His glory.” This happens when the Spirit saturates our body with resurrection life.

This aspect of redemption occurs when our body is transfigured with resurrection life, the life of New Jerusalem, to be a body of glory, matching the glory of New Jerusalem. Therefore (Eph. 4:30), “do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed unto the day of redemption.”
