First Word on the Cross – “Father, forgive them for they know not what they are doing”
Luke 23 verses 33-38

  1. Jesus while dying sought for forgiveness for those who were inflicting pains on him.
  2. This teaches us a life of forgiveness.
  3. As a contemporary Christian, we are also to emulate his virtue of forgiveness.
  4. No matter how perfect you are and your good deeds, people will offend you but learn to how forgive. Luke 11 vs 14.
  5. Often, we sin against God and yet he forgive us when we ask for forgiveness.
  6. You must forgive others their sins if you want God to forgive you your sins – Matthew 18 vs 35.

Prayer:

  • God, forgive me all my sin and cleanse me with your blood.
  • Give me the spirit of forgiveness, that I may learn to forgive those who offend me.

Second Word on the Cross – “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise”
Luke 23 verses 39- 43

  1. Jesus Christ even at the cross saved a soul.
  2. He assured the thief that was nailed beside him that he will be with him in paradise.
  3. This is to show that Jesus Christ is willing to save anyone irrespective of their sins.
  4. The confession of the thief leads to the promise of Jesus Christ
  5. There were two thieves nailed on the cross beside Jesus, one atbthe left and the other at the right. Only the one that was ready and confess his son was saved.
  6. Jesus Christ is ready to forgive us our sins, irrespective of the sin we might have committed be it fornication, adultery, stealing, backbiting, lieing, idolatry, drunkenness, killing or whatsoever the sin might be.
  7. All you need to do, is confess your sin to him.
  8. The thieve knew he had no other escape route after he has been mailed to the cross other than death.
  9. He seize the opportunity of the last hour , he accepted Jesus as his Lord and personal saviour. Even at the point of death he received his salvation.
  10. We can receive this same salvation at anytime, anywhere,once we acknowledge and confess our sins and accept Jesus as our Lord and personal saviour.

Prayer:

  • Confess your sins to God and ask for forgiveness of sin.
  • God give me the grace never to go back into sin.
  • God give me the grace to reign with you in your kingdom.

Third Word on the Cross – “Woman behold thy son, son behold thy mother”
John 19 verses 25-27

  1. This is what we call love in action.
  2. Even in agony Jesus Christ still remember his mother.
  3. At the point of death, He remembered the love of his mother.
  4. Jesus handed his mother to his disciple out of trust.
  5. Can Jesus trust you enough to hand over his treasure in your hand?
  6. Even to the point of death, Mary loved his son.
  7. As a mother is it only when your children are able to provide for you that you only love them?
  8. As a child, how do you care for your parent even when in distress.
  9. The disciple accepted the mother without any complain.
  10. How much do you love others even when you are in trouble?

Prayer:

  • Lord help me to show love to others

Fourth Word on the Cross – “My God, my God, why have thou forsaken me”
Mathew 27 verse 45-46

  1. This is a direct word unto God
  2. To forsake is to be abandon. Jesus Christ felt forsaken and abandoned.
  3. Jesus Christ cries unto God while he was in pain.
  4. No matter what you are going through, God can never forsake you.
  5. God is still in the business of saving souls
  6. Jesus neither insulted nor said evil against God in is difficult moment.
  7. During your difficult moment, remember God is with you.

Prayer:

  • God, help me to remember you are always with me in time of troubles and tribulations.
  • Give me the grace to remain in your presence.
  • Help me to trust and rely on you always.
  • Father, do not leave me alone in all my difficult moments.

Fifth Word on the Cross – “I am thirsty”
John 19 verses 28-29

  1. As human, we all feel thirsty after working tirelessly, Jesus also felt thirsty after all he has gone through.
  2. This shows he is also in form of man with flesh, he can feel our pains as man.
  3. Jesus is thisty for people to serve him.
  4. Jesus is thirsty for who to send his work.
  5. Jesus is thirsty for our life to glorify him.
  6. Are you thirsty for the work of God?
  7. Are you thirsty for God?
  8. Is your life glorifying God?
  9. Jesus Christ was given vinegar when he was thirsty instead of water. Are we not giving him vinegar with our life style instead of giving him glory?
  10. Jesus Christ is thirsty for who to use at this end time, he is calling on you and I. He wants to use you and I.
  11. For you to be thirsty for God, you must be ready to do his will, commandment and his work.
  12. You can only seek for the kingdom of God only if you are thirsty for God.
  13. As we are celebrating the death of Christ for mankind is heaven celebrating your life?

Prayer:

  • Father, let me be thirsty of your kingdom, work, and a life of righteousness.
  • In this perilious time, Lord help me to be useful for your glory.
  • Lord, help me not to crucify you the second time.

Sixth Word on the Cross – “It is finished”
John 19 verses 29-31.

  1. Jesus came to this word for a purpose.
  2. He came with the ultimate purpose to deliver us from sin, that we may be save.
  3. Jesus came to unite us back to the sweet fellowship we once enjoyed before sin disconnected us.
  4. Jesus Christ said it is finished.
  5. This means that every pain, lack, suffering, disappointment, failure, troubles, and tribulations has finished.
  6. Jesus Christ endured every trials till the end.
  7. He fulfilled the will of his father, so he was able to say “it is finished”.

Prayer:

  • God, give me the grace to work in the path you have laid down for me.
  • Father, help me to accomplish your purpose for my life.

Seventh Word on the Cross – “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit”
Luke 23 verses 44-48

  1. After all the pain and agony, Jesus went through for you and I.
  2. In his dying time Jesus committed his spirit and not his body to God because his body was carrying the sin of the world.
  3. The spirit is a gift from God – Genesis 2 vs 7.
  4. The body will perish but the spirit will return to God.
  5. Only kill the body can be killed but not the spirit – Matthew 10 vs 28.
  6. Learn to fear God who can kill bother the spirit and the body.
  7. The spirit you have is not for you and one day it will be requested from you by the owner.
  8. Learn to use your life to serve God alone when the spirit is still in you.
  9. In 3 days time, Christ will rise from the dead. This is to show that death has no power over him and this gives us hope in resurrection at the end.
  10. Death is eminent for all but resurrection is not for everybody.
  11. Only those who endure with him and serve him while alive will resurrect at the end.

Prayer

  • God, let me see you before I see death.
  • Give me grace to honour you with my life.
