Spiritual Awareness: What My Soul Knows

Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. -- Psalm 139:14

The porch is a favored spot for morning Bible study and quiet time in the spring and early summer. I find here a persistent presence that can’t be ignored. A sound that refuses to be silent.

Mosquitoes—the bane of every Texan’s summer. And because they leave painful bites that quickly form welts, I listen intently for them every morning. Being tuned in for the sound of mosquitoes is an absolute, non-negotiable part of my routine. Something I do without even realizing it.

Let the swatting begin.

But what about my level of awareness for the Holy Spirit’s presence in my life? Do I listen as intently? Do I anticipate His persistent guidance to start my day? Unlike my feelings about mosquitoes, do I appreciate His constant presence with me?

Or do I too easily swat it away?

Spiritual awareness is an essential part of the believer’s life and with it come many blessings.

Without spiritual awareness, we are destined to keep walking in the dark. With it, we have all the light we will ever need to face life on this broken world.

Though it too may sting at times, we can't walk in the sanctifying love of Christ without proper spiritual awareness.

A continual awareness of God’s Spirit is a wonderful thing. According to the words in Psalm 139, even when our minds are distracted or our hearts weary with grief or fear, our soul knows.

What a comfort that even when life is a struggle, our soul remains aware.

But are we listening?

When we don’t understand, when all seems dark, when the days are long and the nights longer, our soul knows there is more to what’s going on than what we can see.

Our soul knows that there is no place where we can flee from God’s presence. Wherever we go, God’s Spirit is there.

Sin may hinder our spiritual awareness, but it is our spiritual awareness will turn us from our sin.

There is no darkness so dark that God’s Holy Spirit can’t turn it into the brightness of day.

Our spiritual awareness is fueled by the knowledge that we are completely and perfectly known by God.

When we understand that God knows every word on our tongue.

When we trust that even if we take the wings of the morning (not referring to mosquitoes here), His hand will lead us.

When we acknowledge that He formed every detail about us.

When we proclaim how precious are His thoughts toward us and how great the sum of them.

We cultivate our spiritual awareness through faithful study of His Word and prayer.

When we do these things then we find ourselves more intensely and steadfastly in a state of awareness for the Holy Spirit's presence in our lives.

Questions for Reflection:

1. Have you considered reading your Bible as a way to cultivate spiritual awareness?

2. Read Psalm 139 and note the verses that resonate.

3. How does it feel to know that God knows you completely?

4. What sin in your life might be hindering your spiritual awareness?
