As we approach the season of copious amounts of shopping between Thanksgiving and Christmas, I often hear women talk about hiding purchases from their spouse. As a like-minded Amazon addict, I get it. I really get the struggle. I’ve even considered purchasing the doormat instructing delivery drivers to “hide the evidence.” While the jokes are wildly hilarious, I can’t help but feel a prick of ick when I think about the seed of deceit we are sewing with our shopping habits. What are the lessons we are teaching our children who are closely watching?

I truly believe deceit destroys marriages. I’ve seen it time and time again. Anytime a behavior needs to be kept undercover, it signals a problem area in our lives and marriages. Lying about shopping may seem innocent but it becomes a gateway for deeper deceit.
You can roll your eyes and call me legalistic or you can see that maybe the Lord is trying to reveal something to you.

If the once innocent friendship is requiring you to now delete messages, STOP IT! Please, please, for the sake of your marriage and your family, please don’t go down that road. If you move your lunch ‘meeting’ to a less popular restaurant so nobody will know that isn’t your husband, just don’t. Not being honest about why you were late from work. The secret credit card. The text to your best friend about how awful your husband is. Not telling your husband that your son got detention. All these moments are sowing seeds of deceit into a holy union.

Deceit, in even the smallest form, creates cracks in the foundation that can eventually destroy even the strongest marriage. DECEIT DESTROYS MARRIAGES. May we make it our goal in marriage to live without a single ounce of deceit. God delights in your honesty.
