Sweet Reminders Through Friendship

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!
-- Psalms 34:8 (ESV).
I love how God uses friendship to remind us we are seen.
After my husband Brian’s knee replacement surgery, life became a blur of ice water machines, medications, therapy schedules, and trying to keep up with everyday responsibilities. Somewhere in the middle of all that, I found myself craving ice cream. I never mentioned it to anyone because, honestly, it felt silly compared to everything else we were dealing with. Recovery was the priority. Ice cream seemed small.
But God knew.
Two days later, a friend texted me: “Are you home? There’s something at your door 🙂”
When I opened the back door, there sat three containers of ice cream.
Not only that, but the day before, a few friends from work had brought us dinner, complete with brownies. And let me just say, brownies paired with that ice cream reminded me of Ephesians 3:20 (HCSB) that God “is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think...”
As I stood there holding those containers of ice cream, I realized something: friendship is often one of the ways God carries us through hard seasons.
Sometimes we look for God only in the big miracles like answered prayers, healing, or breakthroughs. Yet often His love shows up through people who text at the right moment, bring dinner without being asked, sit beside us in the waiting room, or leave encouragement on our doorstep.
Those friends may think they are simply delivering a meal or dropping off dessert, but God is using their kindness to whisper, “I see you. I haven’t forgotten you.” James 1:17 (HCSB) reminds us that “every generous act and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights…”
What touched me most wasn’t really the ice cream. It was the reminder that while I was busy caring for everyone else, God had placed people around me who cared, too. Friends who noticed. Friends who showed up. Friends who loved in practical ways.
And isn’t that one of the sweetest gifts of friendship? Scripture tells us in Proverbs 17:17 (HCSB) that “a friend loves at all times…” True friends often reflect the heart of Jesus. They step into our chaos with comfort. They bring laughter into weary places. They remind us we don’t have to carry everything alone.
That evening, after another long day of caregiving, I sat with brownies and ice cream and smiled. Not because life was suddenly easy, but because God had once again shown His love through the people around me.
Maybe today we need to slow down and notice those little reminders. The text message. The cake left on our porch. The friend who checks in. The meal delivered at just the right time. The laughter that breaks through a hard day.
Sometimes the goodness of God arrives looking a lot like friendship.
And as Psalms 34:8 (HCSB) invites us, we can “taste and see that the Lord is good.” Sometimes we taste His goodness through unexpected blessings, and sometimes through the faithful friends He places beside us.
I don’t want to miss those small gifts anymore. They may seem ordinary, but often they are sacred reminders that God loves us deeply. And sometimes He sends that love wrapped in the kindness of a friend.

Questions for Reflection:
- How has God used friendship to encourage you during a difficult season?
- Have you been so focused on the hard things in life that you missed the small reminders of God’s care?
- Is there a friend in your life who may need a simple act of kindness from you today?
