THE CHARACTER OF GOD: The firstborn belongs to God

Exodus 13 vs 2

Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine.

One of the attributes of God is that He wants to be given the firstborn of all things.
This may be the firstborn of living or non-living things. The firstborn of all that you have: your first child, your first income, your first harvest, your first salary, anything that you have, God wants to have the first of it.
This should not be difficult for us to understand because God himself gave us his firstborn, Jesus. So, if he gave us His firstborn, He wants us to give our firstborn as well.
This is one of the basis why some churches demand the first salary of the year as offerings, but giving the first to God goes beyond giving the first salary because some people do not receive a salary as income.
God wants us to worship Him in spirit and truth. Just settle it in your mind that anything new in your life should be for God.
Giving to God does not necessarily mean dropping it in a church. For instance, the Bible does not expect you to go and hand over your first child to the Pastor.
Giving to God means coming to the presence of God to acknowledge that this is my first salary, income, fruit or harvest; I dedicate it to you, honour it to you, and give you thanksgiving for giving me the ability to have the first.
May the spirit of God give us more understanding on this in Jesus’ name.
