The Name Of The Lord Fills The Earth

O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens. Psalm 8:1

The word “Majestic” describes something impressive, dignified, and awe-inspiring. When looking out over the Grand Canyon, one might consider it a majestic scene.

David, the author of Psalm 8, said that the height of God’s glory goes beyond the heavens. He also said the majestic name of the Lord by itself fills the entire earth.

When we speak of the name of the Lord, we usually refer to Him simply as God. The Bible reveals many names of God, highlighting the different aspects of His character and attributes.

Yahweh is the most common and significant name for God in the Scriptures. It appears over sixty-five hundred times in the Old Testament.

The word Yahweh emphasizes God’s self-existence, sovereignty, and covenant relationship with Israel. God identified Himself as Yahweh when He called to Moses to free the Israelites.

“If I go to the people of Israel and tell them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ they will ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what should I tell them?” God replied to Moses, “I am who I am. (Yahweh) Say this to the people of Israel: I am has sent me to you.” Exodus 3:13-14

    God – Strong and Mighty

The creation narrative in Chapter One of Genesis refers to God with the word “Elohim.” It comes from the Hebrew root El, meaning “mighty” or “strong.” It’s used throughout the Old Testament.

When used in its singular form, the word Elohim refers to God, as in God the Creator. Many places in Scripture also use it in the plural, which indicates spiritual entities or gods.

In the beginning God (Elohim) created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1

God (Elohim) presides in the great assembly; he renders judgment among the “gods” (Elohim). Psalm 82:1

As we examine each name given to the Lord, we’ll explore three that begin with the prefix “El.” Then we’ll look at others beginning with ‘Jehovah,’ which means ‘Lord.’

    El Olam

It describes God as the everlasting God” or “the eternal God.” El Olam comes from the Hebrew word “olam,” meaning “eternity” or “world without end.” It emphasizes God’s eternal nature.

Then Abraham planted a tamarisk tree at Beersheba, and there he worshiped the Lord, the Eternal God. Genesis 21:33

    El Roi

It means “The God who sees.” They derive from the Hebrew words “El,” meaning “God,” and “Roi,” meaning “to see.”

Thereafter, Hagar used another name to refer to the Lord, who had spoken to her. She said, “You are the God who sees me.” She also said, “Have I truly seen the One who sees me?” Genesis 16:13

    El Shaddai

The Hebrew word “Shaddai” means “almighty” or “all-powerful.” Thus, El Shaddai describes the Lord as “God Almighty” or “God the All-Powerful.”

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am El-Shaddai —’God Almighty.’ Serve me faithfully and live a blameless life. Genesis 17:1

Our Lord Is More Than Just A Name

The preceding list of names does not include every name given to the Lord in the Bible. According to scholars, it could contain over one hundred names attributed to God.

Each name mentioned above does not label the Lord with a title or nickname. We can respectfully refer to Him by any of the names on that list. Each one accurately describes Him.

God established an impressive list of names of Himself in the Old Testament. They describe His unique character. The names of Jesus in the New Testament, though, reveal His life and mission.

As Jesus taught His disciples, He interjected seven different ways He ministers to His followers. Called the “I Ams” of Jesus, the Lord applied each name to Himself according to its ministry.

The I Ams; the bread of life, the light of the world, the door, the good shepherd, and the true vine. They also included the resurrection and the life, and the way, the truth, and the life.

    Jesus In Revelation

We should shout for joy when we review the names given to Jesus in the Book of Revelation. Out of the thirty-some names given to Him, let’s look at a few of them.

    • I am the Alpha and the Omega—the beginning and the end,” says the Lord God. “I am the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come—the Almighty One.” Revelation 1:8
    • Together they will go to war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will defeat them because he is Lord of all lords and King of all kings. And his called and chosen and faithful ones will be with him.” Revelation 17:14
    • “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this message for the churches. I am both the source of David and the heir to his throne. I am the bright morning star.” Revelation 22:16

What do you consider the most precious name given to the Lord throughout the entire Bible? I’m not sure about you, but for me, it has to be “My Savior.”

Lord, thank you for revealing yourself to us through every name you attributed to yourself. Everything we could ever want or desire we can find in you.
