The Old Heavens and Old Earth

New JerusalemAt the end of time the old heavens and old earth will be replaced by a new heaven and new earth. This replacement is necessary to bring in a new environment for the full manifestation of God’s expression through New Jerusalem.

The Bible begins, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” At the end of Genesis chapter 1, “God saw everything that He had made, and indeed, it was very good.” At that time there was no oldness. However, not long after that Satan deceived man and man fell into sin and death.

Satan’s rebellion (Isa. 14, Ezek. 28) and man’s fall caused the whole universe to be corrupted and become old. Then Jesus came, lived a wonderful human life, and went to the cross to terminate everything old. Colossians 1:20 speaks of His death “to reconcile all things” to God “whether the things on the earth or the things in the heavens.”

This reconciliation has been applied to all who believe into Jesus Christ and to whatever else God has determined. Nevertheless, God still desires a new heaven and a new earth. When they are present, New Jerusalem will appear.  In eternity all will have God’s newness.
