The Privileged Life: Hunter’s Moon

“When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?” Psalm 8:3-4

Moonlight has fascinated us since the world began–probably from the first moment Adam gazed up at God’s beautiful nightlight.

The ancient Romans worshipped their huntress Diana as the moon’s patron goddess…Shakespeare waxed poetic about its pale, ghostly appearance…and composers Beethoven and Chopin created piano masterpieces to its glory. Lovers, cowboys, hunters, and refugees all have long sought its guidance in the darkness.

Whatever its phase, the moon charms us with a lovely view on autumn evenings, especially at the horizon when it’s full and rising all golden-orange. According to earthsky.org, those of us who live in the Northern Hemisphere have already enjoyed the “harvest moon” in September…that’s the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox. The “hunter’s moon,” which falls after the harvest moon, has just occurred this past weekend.

Beyond the emotional pull, the moon exercises a considerable amount of influence over our earth, setting the tides in motion and even potentially governing human physiological cycles…all while spinning its one-sided view in constant motion around us.

Without it, our lives are darker, literally. A moonless night shrouds us in gloom and darkness. We miss the moon when it’s not there.

So if your skies are clear this evening, go outside for a long, contemplative gaze at the hunter’s moon, which should be quite full enough still to reflect the sun’s glory. Let its incredible beauty and radiance shine joy into your heart. Thank our God for His incredible creativity and artistry in creation!

Holy God, Creator of the heavens and earth, we thank You for Your faithfulness in orchestrating the movement of the heavenly bodies, seasons, and times. We thank You for Your beauty…we stand in awe of You and all You have made. May the light of Your countenance shine upon us! May the Light of Christ illuminate our souls! In His name, Amen.
