The Tree of Life in the Paradise of God

New JerusalemRevelation 2:7 has the Lord’ promise, “To him who overcomes, to him I will give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the Paradise of God.” Where or what is this paradise?

The first mention of the tree of life is in the garden of Eden, with Eden meaning pleasure. This was the first Paradise of God on earth. Today we eat the tree of life as our source of spiritual food. The term tree of life is not used in regard to our current Christian life but it must point to the Lord Jesus who clearly presented Himself as the food of life in John 6.

To overcome today is to “put away every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us” (Heb. 12:1) and to focus our attention on the Lord. John 6:35 has His promise “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me shall by no means hunger.” He is the present reality of the tree of life.

The promise in Revelation 2 will also be a reward to overcoming believers in the coming age. Then the ultimate Paradise of God will be New Jerusalem. In New Jerusalem will be both the river of water of life and the tree of life with the many other blessings presented in Revelation 22:3-5. Surely New Jerusalem will be the eternal Paradise of God.
