The Triune God Dispensing Himself to Us

In Revelation 22:1 John tells us that an angel showed him “a river of water of life, bright as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb in the middle of its street.”

God and the Lamb have one throne, the throne of the redeeming God. This reflects what the Lord Jesus said in John 14, “Believe Me that I am New Jerusalemin the Father and the Father is in Me.”

In the New Jerusalem we see that the very God who sits on the throne is our redeeming God, from whose throne proceeds the river of water of life for our supply and satisfaction. This depicts how the Triune God—God, the Lamb, and the Spirit symbolized by the water of life—dispenses Himself to His redeemed under His headship (implied in the authority of the throne) for eternity.*

Today God is our God, the Lamb is our Redeemer, and the Spirit flows in us (John 7:38-39). The throne today is “the throne of grace” to which we should come with boldness to “receive mercy and find grace” (Heb. 4:16).

Our coming forward is not with our own boldness but with boldness based on all that He has accomplished as our High Priest (Heb. 4:14-15). Here we receive the rich supply of mercy and grace now to prepare us for New Jerusalem and we will receive even more in that wonderful city.
