The Wall Expresses, Separates, Protects
The wall of the New Jerusalem is “great and high” (21:12)
The designation “the holy city” means the separated city, a city that is separated from anything other than God. This city, as the embodiment of the processed Triune God, is a separated, sanctified, holy city.
Although the wall of the holy city is mainly for expression, spontaneously it becomes a separation and a protection. Anything that is separated is also preserved and protected. The wall separates us from everything common (21:27), protects us, and keeps us in the realm of God’s expression.*
Remember that “the building work of its wall was jasper” (Rev. 21:18). As such New Jerusalem is constituted with God to express God (4:3). Thus, besides the expression of God by the wall, the separation of the city and the protection of God’s interests are of God, not of our natural, human element or effort.
Multiple verses speak about the Lord’s guarding us, protecting us. This is not something outward, but is by the Lord within us. “Who are being guarded by the power of God through faith unto a salvation ready to be revealed at the last time” (1 Peter 1:5). This inward, divine guarding is our present experience of New Jerusalem’s wall.
